WHAT IS AQIQAH?

Aqiqah, is defined as the animal that is slaughtered on childbirth and remove the hair. It was narrated from Salmaan ibn ‘Aamir al-Dabbi that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say:

“Aqeeqah is to be offered for a (newly born) boy, so slaughter (an animal) for him, and remove all dirt from him.”
Shaving of the baby’s hair: the hair must be weighed, and the sadaqah given is dependent upon the rate of silver on the day (donors must do the calculations themselves).

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF AQIQAH?

When a child is born, an Aqiqah must be given by the parents/guardian as a gesture of thanks to Allah (SWT), protection from Shaytaan, expiation of sins and preventing any calamities, inshaAllah. About the purpose of the ‘aqeeqah, it was mentioned in a hadeeth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him):

“Every child is in pledge for his ‘aqeeqah.”
This should be performed seven days after the birth of the child – or failing that, every subsequent seven days before the child is mature – based on the Islamic lunar calendar.

HOW IS IT DONE?

For a boy – two sheep should be sacrificed, each of which should meet the same conditions as a sheep for udhiya (sacrifice), and for a girl – one sheep should be sacrificed.

The sheep should be slaughtered on the seventh day, but if there is a delay it may be slaughtered at any time, and there is no sin in delaying it, although it is preferable to do it as soon as possible.
