00:00 - Oh, the first kiss on screen, Joseph.
00:02 - I think we were both nervous,
00:03 we're trying to like,
00:04 it's the first time we'd kissed on screen,
00:06 and kissed in general, we hadn't kissed off screen.
00:09 But.
00:10 - Joe, you weren't supposed to say that.
00:11 - Sorry, damn.
00:13 - Hi, I'm Kit Conner.
00:14 - And I'm Joe Locke.
00:15 And today we're gonna be sharing
00:16 some of our firsts with Teen Vogue.
00:18 (upbeat music)
00:21 - My first ever audition was for an Xbox commercial.
00:29 And I got it, somehow.
00:31 So exciting.
00:32 I didn't get anything from the Xbox commercial,
00:34 actually, annoyingly.
00:35 I just.
00:36 - Not even an Xbox?
00:37 - Not even an Xbox.
00:38 - My first audition was for "Hot Stopper".
00:40 So, we'll know how that one went.
00:44 - I'd say the first friend that I made on set
00:46 was the gorgeous Mr. William Gao,
00:51 who is actually my husband.
00:53 - Congrats, by the way.
00:54 - Sorry, I couldn't make it.
00:56 - Whatever.
00:57 I think I immediately thought
00:58 that he was just unbelievably cool.
00:59 So, I really wanted him to like me.
01:03 I was like, that would be cool
01:05 if this cool person thinks that I'm somewhat cool.
01:10 I would then later learn
01:11 that he's also a very, very, very lovely person.
01:15 So that made me like him even more.
01:18 But just immediately, on the surface level,
01:21 I was like, this guy's cool.
01:22 I want friends.
01:23 - I think we all became friends very quickly.
01:25 'Cause "Hot Stopper" was such a show
01:27 where everyone spent so much time with each other.
01:29 Like, for me especially,
01:31 I found we all bonded as a group very quickly.
01:34 - First time I played rugby was the first day on set.
01:38 - Yeah.
01:39 - No, we had a--
01:39 - We had one session.
01:41 One rehearsal session.
01:42 - I'd been training for a couple of weeks.
01:45 And I say training, it didn't really pay off, clearly.
01:47 But I had been training
01:49 with my really great rugby trainer, Paul.
01:52 And there was one time where Joe came and joined us.
01:56 And he came in with not,
01:59 we said come in, I guess, sweatpants.
02:02 - I came in sweatpants.
02:03 - They were some very bougie sweatpants.
02:05 - I don't own rugby clothes.
02:08 - But just like sports clothes.
02:09 - Yeah, I do now, but then I definitely didn't.
02:12 - They were just, he was looking very chic.
02:15 And I was like, this isn't gonna go well
02:17 if he's about to jump in the mud.
02:19 But you did quite well.
02:20 - I did fine.
02:21 I can do sports, I just choose not to.
02:23 - Yeah, you can.
02:24 Our first kiss on screen,
02:25 what was it?
02:27 - Rain kiss.
02:28 - It was the rain kiss.
02:29 - I remember it distinctly
02:30 because the way that they had to angle the umbrella,
02:33 the water went straight down my back.
02:35 I'd go in for the kiss and my lips,
02:37 I was so cold, it was just like shaking and shivering.
02:39 'Cause the rain machine was cold,
02:41 the umbrella made the water go down my back.
02:43 - It's just like a cold shower.
02:44 - We were both just soaking, it was just cold.
02:46 - Yeah.
02:47 - And then also, I think we were both nervous
02:49 and trying to like, it was the first time
02:50 we'd kissed on screen, kissed in general,
02:53 we hadn't kissed off screen.
02:54 But...
02:55 - Jokes!
02:58 You weren't supposed to say that.
02:58 - Sorry, damn!
03:00 It was stressful, but it looks great in the show.
03:03 - Yeah, I think it's a really beautiful moment.
03:05 - I do remember one of the runners
03:07 getting us Krispy Kreme donuts afterwards
03:10 and I just started crying at the sight of this donut.
03:12 'Cause I was so cold and tired.
03:14 - Yeah, I remember that actually.
03:15 Yeah, he really started weeping
03:17 at this Krispy Kreme donut
03:19 because it was just an emotional day.
03:21 - It was an emotional day.
03:23 - Ooh, who was the first person
03:24 to break character in the world?
03:26 - I don't think the first person was,
03:27 but I think we all sort of quite equally do it sometimes.
03:30 - Yeah.
03:31 - Sometimes you can't help yourself.
03:32 - We did it a lot in season two.
03:33 - Yeah, and that's because we were all
03:36 more comfortable with each other
03:37 and therefore knew how to make each other laugh.
03:39 - There were certain points where we were doing scenes
03:40 and our main objective was to make the other person laugh.
03:44 There's one scene in the show that is gonna,
03:46 that has made it in.
03:47 - I just...
03:48 - And it's so funny, it was literally me, Joe,
03:53 Toby and Will.
03:54 - You've gotta guess which scene.
03:55 - Yes, people are gonna guess, it's in Paris.
03:57 We just haven't laughed so much on set.
04:00 And we laugh a lot on set.
04:02 And that was so funny.
04:03 And it was good, I think.
04:04 - I think it was great.
04:05 - I think it came out well.
04:06 First time we shot in Paris was a crazy week.
04:09 - Yeah.
04:10 - First thing was, literally we got there
04:12 and they'd cordoned off this section
04:15 in a very public place in Paris.
04:18 And we were meant to run into this metro
04:20 and there were loads of people staring at us.
04:21 On "Hearts of the Ball" we weren't really used
04:23 to shooting anywhere where there were people watching.
04:28 Really shot a lot of season one in the school
04:32 and things like that.
04:32 So it was very strange for us to do that.
04:35 That was an intense first day for us, for sure.
04:37 - Which became an intense week.
04:38 - Yes, it was one week filming about three or four,
04:43 like three episodes.
04:44 - Yeah, which is not normal.
04:46 - Which is not normal, but we did it.
04:48 - Whatever you say is gonna really,
04:49 that's what I say.
04:50 - I mean, like a brother.
04:55 - I was thinking that.
04:56 - Yeah.
04:57 - That was my word too.
04:58 - Or like partner, like partner in crime.
05:00 - Yeah.
05:00 - So.
05:01 - Duo.
05:02 - Yeah, duo.
05:03 - Duo.
05:04 - Slightly less sort of romantic or poetic, but sorry.
05:08 - I'll find another word.
05:09 - But yeah, we'll say brother, partner,
05:11 you know, partner in brackets, in crime.
05:14 - Close brackets.
05:15 - Close brackets, there you go.
05:16 You got it.
05:17 - Close brackets.
05:18 - Yeah.
05:19 - And we were just thinking the same thing.
05:20 So clearly we're just in sync.
05:22 You know?
05:23 - In sync, so at the same time.
05:24 - I used to work in a toy shop and I hated it.
05:28 And I would hide my phone in my shoe.
05:31 So I could go on my phone when people weren't looking.
05:34 It was a toy shop upstairs
05:35 and like a home hardware store downstairs.
05:37 And you always never wanted to be on the toy section
05:39 because if you're in the toy section, it's really quiet.
05:42 Whereas the home hardware was really busy.
05:44 And if it was quiet, the days were so much longer.
05:46 My first job was an Xbox commercial.
05:49 My second job was a Sainsbury's commercial
05:53 and it was a back to school commercial.
05:55 And it was really upsetting at the time actually
05:58 because I did the voiceover for it.
06:00 And the lines were something like,
06:01 "Oh, new jumper, mom reckons I'll grow into it."
06:05 Or something like that, 'cause it was a bit big.
06:07 And then they actually dubbed over my voice
06:09 with a Northern accent.
06:11 "New jumper, mom reckons I'll grow into it."
06:14 Everyone thought I was just putting on
06:16 a really bad Northern accent,
06:17 but it was actually a Northern kid.
06:19 - Putting on a bad Northern accent.
06:20 - If anything, he got mugged off
06:21 because I got all the screen time, but whatever.
06:25 I think my first big purchase when I was younger
06:28 was I'd just done a film.
06:32 It was like one of my first like paychecks.
06:34 And I was like 10.
06:36 I used to really love the film "Spy Kids."
06:39 I can't remember which "Spy Kids" it was,
06:41 but there was one where there was like a flip phone
06:44 that came out of a watch.
06:45 So I always, when I saw that the Apple Watch came out,
06:47 I was like, "I really want that."
06:49 So then I bought an Apple Watch
06:51 with one of my first paychecks.
06:54 - I actually also, mine was an Apple Watch,
06:56 and I bought it because at this toy shop,
06:58 I was getting caught on my phone.
07:00 And with my paycheck, I bought myself an Apple Watch
07:03 so I could go on the Apple Watch instead of being on my phone
07:05 and they couldn't tell me off.
07:07 - So there's just, there's a real story
07:09 that's connecting here. - Yeah.
07:10 Maybe Brazil.
07:11 - Brazil was pretty insane.
07:12 That was the only time I've ever felt famous in my life.
07:16 We did Comic-Con.
07:16 It was fun, but it was intense.
07:19 We can still walk down the street
07:20 and do what we want to do, why not?
07:22 - Yeah, no, it's not that serious.
07:25 And then also maybe when we went to Paris.
07:28 - Yeah.
07:29 - Was like, that was the,
07:30 I'd say that was the actual first time
07:32 where it was intense and like, you know,
07:34 just like people sort of coming to your hotel
07:37 and things like that.
07:38 I'll tell you one word, or maybe two words.
07:41 More kissing.
07:43 Immediately. - Yeah.
07:44 Straight off the bat. - Episode one.
07:45 Episode one. - 10 minutes.
07:46 - The door opens.
07:47 Smooching. - Yeah.
07:48 - That's gonna be a shock to the system.
07:50 After watching season one,
07:51 there's just sort of angsty like that.
07:55 Suddenly we're, we're smooching.
07:57 - I was gonna say more mature.
08:00 - That's probably a more mature answer actually.
08:03 Thank you so much for having us, Team Vogue.
08:05 Hopefully you guys watch and enjoy
08:07 season two of "Heartstopper."
08:09 - Yeah, watch it.
08:10 (upbeat music)
