00:10 Hi, it's Darren here from guitar.com.
00:15 Established all the way back in 1932,
00:17 D'Angelico was primarily known for their arch top jazz guitars.
00:22 But since their purchase by investors in 1999, they've introduced a versatile
00:26 catalog of guitars that appeal to players of a wide variety of guitar styles.
00:30 The new TOR series belongs to their XL range of guitars,
00:34 a range that falls between their Premier and
00:36 Deluxe series in terms of appointments and price.
00:38 The Premier range being the least expensive, and
00:41 the Deluxe series having the most luxurious spec.
00:44 Now the three models we have here today are the XL DC TOR, this SS TOR, and
00:50 Mini DC TOR.
00:51 From large to small, the body widths are 16, 15, and 14 inches respectively, and
00:56 all three models are manufactured in Korea.
00:58 Now these models already exist in the XL range and feature block inlays,
01:03 the famous ornamental headstock with tuners,
01:05 traditional shaped F holes, and Seymour Duncan pickups.
01:09 However, this new XL TOR collation takes a more utilitarian approach
01:13 with its stripped back aesthetics.
01:15 So here we have simple dot inlays, vintage style Grover tuners,
01:20 no pickguard, and 1930s inspired diamond F holes,
01:24 which bring a particular old school charm.
01:27 All models are of a semi-hollow construction with center block, and
01:31 have a 12 inch ebony fretboard, and laminated maple top back and sides.
01:36 Now they're remarkably light, so it's probably a wise choice to appoint
01:40 the small vintage style Grover tuners in place of the large ornamental ones
01:44 usually found on DeAngeligos.
01:46 Otherwise we suspect we'd be experiencing some serious neck dive,
01:50 but all three guitars balance very well.
01:52 Another common feature are the Supro Bolt Bucker pickups designed in
01:56 collaboration with Supro, a company DeAngeligo acquired in 2020.
02:01 The medium output pastel pickups perform similarly in each guitar.
02:05 They have a very open balanced sound, and
02:07 thanks to the ebony fretboard, the high end frequencies are enhanced.
02:11 The SS TOR here delivers slightly more output, but
02:14 that's probably due to its larger mass.
02:17 Although some of the tones we've used in our examples are excessively overdriven,
02:21 all three guitars actually respond to high gain amp settings
02:25 in a manner not entirely expected from semi-hollow guitars,
02:28 as they're all capable of delivering some serious shred style tones,
02:31 if you so wish.
02:33 Although all three guitars are very versatile, we have devised three little
02:36 tracks to hopefully highlight what we consider to be their strengths.
02:40 Hope you enjoy.
