00:00 This road and the forest around it were engulfed by wildfires only hours ago.
00:06 The blazes spread quickly due to strong winds.
00:09 The people fleeing in those cars were surrounded by flames
00:14 and witnesses say that unable to escape, they died.
00:18 There were five people here.
00:22 The man was coming to help.
00:24 And in this car there was a family of seven members from Algiers.
00:29 A father, a mother and their children.
00:33 May God have mercy on them.
00:37 This northern coastal area of Algeria, the mountains of the Kabylia region,
00:45 has faced roughly 100 fires this summer and firefighters have put out most of them.
00:51 Among the victims, some 10 soldiers trapped in their base.
00:56 This family of farmers was fortunate to flee their home and find refuge.
01:02 But they have lost everything they owned.
01:04 The fire jumped from one place to another.
01:08 I never saw such flames.
01:11 We ran.
01:12 We first ran outside from this door but the tree caught fire.
01:19 Then the door exploded and we ran from the other side and went to our neighbor's house.
01:26 We ran from our neighbor's house.
01:28 Algeria battles fires every summer due to the dry tinder and extreme temperatures.
01:34 Authorities purchased more means to monitor and put out fires this year
01:38 but not enough to avert this destruction.
