We asked the people of Lancashire whether the current cost of living crisis is tempting them to move abroad...
Transcript
00:00 Hi, I'm digital reporter Amy Seddon. This week we shared a story about a family from
00:05 Bournemouth who have moved to Bulgaria because they couldn't afford the mortgage prices in
00:09 the UK at the moment. The move in total saved them nearly £300,000. The cost of living
00:15 crisis continuing to rise. I'm going out on the streets of Lancashire to ask people whether
00:20 they would consider moving abroad for a cheaper lifestyle. Let's see what you had to say.
00:25 With the current cost of living crisis getting worse, would you consider moving abroad?
00:29 Yeah, in a heartbeat. Where would you think of going?
00:32 To Spain. Why Spain?
00:34 Because we're in a village called Blanes in Spain and it's just a really calm, lovely
00:40 place and my autistic son absolutely loves it so that's where I would go.
00:45 With the current cost of living crisis continuing, are you considering moving abroad?
00:50 Yeah, I'm moving to China in September, so working for a union clan still, but working
00:56 on a programme in China there because the cost of living is a lot better there and money
01:01 goes a lot further. Are you moving there because of the cost of
01:03 living? Yeah, that's a main factor in it, definitely.
01:06 Do you know anything about how much you might be saving?
01:10 Yeah, so the exchange rate is about 10 to 1 but we get accommodation included and tax
01:16 wise it's a lot better and bills, food, everything really is a lot cheaper. So yeah, the plan
01:22 is to save up while I'm there and have enough money to then come back and hopefully get
01:26 more when I'm back here. Would you have considered moving as far if
01:29 it wasn't for the cost of living crisis? No, I think ideally I'd stay closer to home
01:34 or yeah, if I could do the same job and have the same quality of life in the UK I'd stay
01:38 but yeah, I can't have the same quality of life here now so yeah, that's why I'm moving.
01:43 With the current cost of living crisis, would you consider moving abroad?
01:47 Probably yeah. Where would you go?
01:49 I would go back to Spain. Are you from Spain?
01:52 Yeah. Have you noticed the cost of living difference?
01:54 Yeah, definitely. I've been here for 10 years and there's definitely a difference, just
02:01 groceries and bus tickets, just general living. It's also harder to get jobs, especially for
02:09 immigrants so I think a lot of Europeans are considering moving back just because it's
02:13 harder. So you wouldn't have considered moving back
02:17 if it wasn't so hard? Well, I am considering, yeah, I'm just waiting
02:20 to finish my last year at uni and then me and my boyfriend are thinking about moving
02:24 back if there's no jobs and stuff. It depends but yeah.
02:31 There's not much reason to stay at the moment. Yeah, it just seems like there's not much
02:35 reason to stay right now. Everything's harder, even my sister, she's trying to open a bank
02:42 account right now because she's 18 and they won't let her because she's got a Spanish
02:46 passport and they said that she needs to provide proof of living but she doesn't really have
02:51 anything to her name because she lives with my parents. She even brought a letter from
02:57 the embassy saying that she's been here for 10 years but they won't let her open a bank
03:01 account so it just seems that everything's just more hurdles and it's just more difficult
03:06 for immigrants to make a living, live here, make something of yourself, which I think
03:12 is the reason that most people came here because there was more opportunity but now it just
03:16 Seems like there's not really.
