Man Utd coach Travis Binnion on Wrexham's 3-1 win in San Diego
Transcript
00:00 So the level of the opposition, the physicality, the crowd, there's a lot to take from it.
00:07 Ultimately we weren't good enough in the first half tonight.
00:10 In the second half and the second half it was difficult to take too much from it.
00:14 I think the boys competed, they fought throughout.
00:17 In the first half we weren't good enough, we had opportunities to dominate the ball and control the game.
00:21 We had chances but we should have created more chances and the two goals we gave away were poor goals.
00:27 Because really, Wexham didn't have too much of the game if we're dead honest.
00:33 We had all the ball and we were probably better than what we were.
00:35 Did Dan feel hard done by it to be second? Because it looked pretty harsh.
00:39 Yeah, we looked at it and he was unfortunate.
00:42 But obviously there was a challenge in the first half where Mullen gets injured.
00:47 We hope he's alright. I know Bish has reached out to him already.
00:51 And the referee could have sent him off for that.
00:54 I think Dan's really unfortunate. I think maybe he felt that one of the goals he lost was side as well.
00:59 But ultimately it's about us. We weren't good enough with the ball in the first half.
01:04 We didn't defend key moments well enough.
01:07 Was it part of the plan to take Nathan Offutt part time?
01:12 Yeah, they were always sharing the game. Van Dijk was always doing it part time.
01:16 The fact that you're both feisty, do you like that?
01:18 Because it's a test of control for aggression and the connectiveness.
01:23 The lads have got to compete. They've got to learn to manage themselves and handle themselves.
01:29 Ultimately, let's be honest, if you give the referees a chance in the games, then these things can happen.
01:37 It's a great learning experience for all our players.
01:40 But the competitive side of it is what they need.
01:42 If we don't get enough of that in the tournament football, a lot of these boys will hopefully progress to the first team or go on alone in senior football.
01:49 They're going to have to be equipped and ready for what's coming.
01:53 These type of games, the EFL trophy games, are the best games in our season.
01:57 What was Nathan like in the dressing room?
01:59 It was a horrible experience for him seeing what happened to him.
02:02 Obviously the crowd, him and him. It's quite a strange experience for you, I felt.
02:07 It's part and parcel of the game, isn't it?
02:09 No one wants to see anyone get injured. He's made an honest challenge.
02:13 Paul Mullen has come off worse. He's already reached out to him.
02:19 He's doing him. It's what it is.
02:22 Has he reached out and spoken to him?
02:24 Yes, he's tried to. He's a great lad.
02:28 He hasn't got a bad bone in his body. It's just unfortunate.
02:33 Will some of the players rejoin the left-footed squad?
02:37 Yes, some of the boys have come out of the first-team tour to play tonight.
02:43 They'll return and then maybe they'll have to speak to the management.
02:47 A couple more may stay on as well. We go back tomorrow.
02:50 It'll be a good core of tonight. They'll stay on.
02:54 I didn't know you were here tonight.
02:56 I saw a little bit of a conversation with you at one point.
02:58 First off, I didn't know you were on the ground.
03:00 He's been really good. It's been really insightful for the staff to spend three days with him.
03:06 He couldn't have been any more welcoming, any more open.
03:09 We sat in Real Madrid preps, Arsenal debriefs, talked about Wrexham together.
03:16 He was at a training yesterday and he's been really supportive.
03:20 He's allowed us to get on with it and he's given his thoughts.
03:24 We can't ask for any more. It's been brilliant for our staff and our players to have that experience over the last few days.
03:30 You spoke yesterday about wanting to play identity from his team all the way down to the academy.
03:36 Did that give you confidence in things to work towards?
03:38 Yes. The staff give us real clarity in terms of what we have to do.
03:42 Did we achieve that tonight? No.
03:45 We've got a lot to work at but we'll get there.
03:49 It's really brilliant that we've got a manager that wants to see an identity flow through the club.
03:55 We know what we've got to go after and achieve so we can't really ask for any more.
03:59 Is Eric quite big on that? The integration between the two squads so the lads can see what's coming?
04:06 Yes. Obviously Dan got sent off tonight but you look at Kobe this time on the return from pre-season.
04:14 Dan is impressed. Lots of the players are impressed and are part of their group every day.
04:21 The amount of opportunities our players got last season on a daily basis for him to look at and be a part of it to learn.
04:29 We literally cannot ask for any more. I think any manager should want that.
04:35 Our manager goes above and beyond with his staff to make sure we've got a really good programme and a really good alignment.
04:41 Just one more question. Did you want you to play the same way?
04:44 We've moved to the midfield a bit like they do in the first team.
04:51 We've made moves to ensure that happens in terms of programme, schedule, players.
05:01 Bit by bit we'll look more like them and the players will become more accustomed to it and they'll transition easier.
