00:00 Italian Premier Giorgia Maloney has called for a new and more equal relationship between
00:04 Europe and developing countries that produce migrants.
00:08 The plea came at a summit she convened in Rome involving 20 nations as well as key EU
00:13 officials and international organisations.
00:16 She also blamed the people traffickers more than the poverty and conflicts that drives
00:20 migration from developing countries.
00:23 European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, meanwhile, spoke of opening up legal
00:27 avenues to migration.
00:29 "At the centre of the migratory flows are mainly them, people, lives, hopes, fears,
00:40 suffering.
00:41 Used, exploited by criminal organisations that only follow the logic of profit.
00:48 It is our duty to take care of our states, but it is also our duty to take care of the
00:55 destiny of these people."
00:59 The flow of migrants, many of them refugees, has risen by 50,000 this year in Italy and
01:04 it's not yet August.
01:06 But many developing countries disagree with Maloney on the causes.
01:10 Tunisian President Kai Sayed blamed the increased migration on European colonisation.
