00:00 With Texas football headed to the SEC in 2024, so does the infamous "horns down" mockery
00:06 from opposing fan bases.
00:08 SEC officials told reporters at SEC Media Days on Tuesday that the trademark hook 'em
00:13 gesture would not receive an unsportsmanlike conduct call unless it fell into one of three
00:19 areas.
00:20 The Big 12, however, took a different, more strict stance on emotion, almost penalizing
00:25 players for future games if they flash the gesture when playing Texas.
00:30 If the gesture begins to make a travesty of the game, if it is used to taunt an opponent
00:35 or begins compromising the league's ability to manage the game, that is when the SEC will
00:40 step in and determine the extended period of punishment.
00:44 John McDade, the SEC's coordinator of officials, commented saying that there is a difference
00:49 between a player giving a signal directly in the face of an opponent, as opposed to
00:54 doing it with teammates celebrating after a touchdown.
00:57 It's a big difference, and each instance will be evaluated before jumping to the unsportsmanlike
01:02 conduct talk.
01:04 While some could argue that the "horns down" signal is an acknowledgment of the prestige
01:09 of the Texas program, the SEC will become the judge of what is sportsmanlike and what
01:13 is not starting on July 1, 2024, whenever the Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners make
01:19 the move to the Southeastern Conference.
