00:15 in allowing foreign doctors to practice in Malaysia to overcome the shortage of specialists.
00:20 Former health minister Dr. S Subramaniam says this will only create unnecessary competition
00:25 among medical practitioners, which could in turn affect medical standards.
00:29 However, Subramaniam says foreign recruitment could be considered for
00:33 areas where Malaysia lacks expertise, such as heart and liver transplants.
00:37 This kind of expertise we still don't have.
00:42 And there have been instances, for example,
00:44 liver transplant specialists from Singapore have come and practiced in Malaysia.
00:48 Meanwhile, Malaysian Medical Association President Dr. R Murugan Raj
00:53 doesn't see any need for Malaysia to import doctors.
00:56 Murugan says importing foreign specialists should only be considered if there is a genuine need,
01:01 especially given that between 3,000 and 5,000 medical graduates enter the profession annually.
