00:34 Hello everyone and welcome back to the Mouth of the Time podcast brought to you by the Shields Gazette.
00:43 I'm Dominic Skirt, joined by Joe Buck to discuss all the latest news surrounding Newcastle United.
00:48 The transfer news is hotting up, the players are back for pre-season, plenty to talk about Joe.
00:53 Absolutely, yeah it's been a whirlwind last couple of days hasn't it?
00:58 It's been sort of a quiet issue, obviously I had Sandra Otonali joining and then it sort of went quiet for a few days
01:03 but once the Gateshead game got underway on Saturday and then Rangers it's been all go on all fronts hasn't it?
01:09 So yeah I'm excited to talk about all the recent updates at Newcastle.
01:14 Yeah and big update, big story today, Sandra Otonali, Harvey Bond sorry, will follow Sandra Otonali through the door
01:24 as Newcastle United's third summer signing, second major summer signing if you like.
01:30 He's currently as we speak at the training ground for his medical following a £38m agreement with Leicester City for the winger.
01:41 Joe, what do you make of Harvey Bond set to be a Newcastle player, obviously with the caveat of Alan St Maxman going to Saudi Arabia?
01:53 I think it's a brilliant deal, it's funny because most of the early summer I was dominated by James Madison
01:59 he was linked with Newcastle so he goes top. I think Barnes went under the radar as almost a hole of last year really
02:05 because James Madison got the headlines everywhere, he went almost at Leicester but 13 goals last season
02:10 and a team that went down from left wing is a brilliant hole and I think that you look at that, you just look at the basic stats
02:17 it's a good deal, he's 25 so he'll be coming into his prime very soon.
02:23 He's English which obviously helps the registration rules, he knows the Premier League, there's no risk of him not being able to adapt or anything like that.
02:30 I think on paper it's a great deal and for me he seems very much an Eddie Howe type of winger, he will press, he'll do all of the stuff that Eddie Howe wants him to do off the ball
02:39 but he's also very good in front of goal, stats last season show that and along with their armour on on the right wing
02:46 hopefully there's some goals from out wide for Newcastle this year.
02:49 It certainly seems a sensible sign and when you look at the statistics, I mean the statistics don't tell the full story
02:56 but Harvey Barnes I think in the Premier League, 60 goal involvements, goals and assists combined
03:02 these are sort of numbers that Newcastle wingers can't really compete with and this is at a Leicester side.
03:09 Okay, they've been at the right end of the Premier League for the majority but as you say, suffered a relegation last season.
03:16 Yes, we may not talk about St Maximin now, I'm sure his name will crop up but when you just look at the basic comparisons between St Maximin and Barnes
03:26 it's a no brainer really which one you would rely on for goals and assists.
03:31 Yes, St Maximin is probably more flashy and easier on the eye than maybe Harvey Barnes might be
03:36 but in terms of pure numbers and what we expect to happen next season, Harvey Barnes is the one that you would think that Newcastle would plump for
03:45 and hopefully he's honourable. I wouldn't say he's guaranteed goals because we could be talking about this in six months' time and he hasn't scored
03:53 but right now he does seem like someone who will guarantee goals at the club.
03:58 Yes, St Maximin, he'll depart with I think a lot of Newcastle fans will be sad to see him leave.
04:07 I think he's certainly been a bright spark in what have been previously dark times for Newcastle
04:13 and as the team evolved and improved around him, he faded into the background slightly
04:20 which for the type of player he is probably just didn't suit him.
04:23 So it's one of those moves I think, Al-Ali going to the Saudi Pro League, playing regularly, obviously the financial benefits of that.
04:32 I think it's just a deal that makes sense for everyone. I don't know if you feel the same way?
04:37 Yes, I do. I think St Maximin is almost at the wrong place at the wrong time. I think he's in that little bit of a sweet spot of Newcastle.
04:44 He probably won't miss his output too much next year but he's also someone that they can get a bit of money for
04:50 and someone that will be relatively easy to sell. It's a shame because as you mentioned, I think for at least two and a half years
04:57 he was probably the only reason to watch Newcastle at times. He was the one.
05:00 Even now when he picks up the ball, you still get the edge of your seat and you think he could do anything here.
05:05 Maybe he won't have that next year with some of the options but I think one goal in the Premier League last year
05:14 and obviously that came back in August, brilliant goal he got to add, but he's not someone that Newcastle will miss too much.
05:20 If he can get £20 million for him, obviously get his wage off the books as well, it's a deal that Newcastle really have to look into.
05:27 I know we always talk about financial fair play. I think we're bored of talking about it but he's someone that with them,
05:33 financial fair play constraints, if he can get them off, if he can sell him now for money, it'll freeze up.
05:39 Newcastle will do a lot more this summer and as I said, I think for St Maximin it's just the wrong place at the wrong time.
05:45 Yeah, that's what Eddie Howe was saying, the St Maximin deal. Eddie Howe very rarely gives much away on transfers
05:52 but the fact he gave quite a bit away after the Rangers game on Tuesday night was telling.
05:57 The suggestion from him was this potential sale, imminent sale you could say, is just going to free Newcastle up a lot more.
06:05 It's allowed them to bring in Sandro Tannoli for example, it allowed them to bring in Harvey Barnes and potentially explore
06:12 some more options in the transfer window as well. I think it's a sale that had to happen.
06:19 St Maximin we've always said is Newcastle's most saleable asset in terms of is he that important to the first team?
06:28 Probably not. In the same way someone like Bruno definitely is, Sven Botman, Alexander Isak, players like that
06:35 certainly are who you could sell for a lot of money. But on St Maximin you can get a decent chunk for, I'd say it's probably
06:41 the first major sale PIF have done since taking over the club because Chris Wood and John Jo Shelvey
06:50 pretty much weren't really first team players or regulars at the point they were sold.
06:56 So St Maximin, you'll be amiss but I think it's a sensible deal done by the club and should certainly on paper
07:05 statistically improve Newcastle United even though like you say they do lose a bit of that edgier-you-see-it flair
07:12 which as Newcastle fans are watching Newcastle as reporters you do love and you will be amiss for that.
07:21 But how do you think in maybe 10-15 years history will look back on St Maximin at Newcastle United?
07:29 I think I've seen a lot of fans on social media talk, you know, it's easy comparisons with Ben Arfa, Robert, Ginola
07:35 you know, sort of French, mercurial left-wingers. I think that he probably will go down maybe a little bit more.
07:41 I don't know, it's probably recency bias. For me he was better than Ben Arfa from someone who I watch him to regularly.
07:48 For me I would never have got on board with Ben Arfa and Newcastle United but St Maximin was always that thing
07:53 where you always felt you could do something. As I said I think the comparison between how excited I was to watch him
07:58 and how unenthusiastic about watching Newcastle at all during those couple of years really sets him apart.
08:05 It is going to be a big shame to see him go. As Newcastle progress in the next few years and if they get to where we hope
08:15 and think they can't get to, he will be looked back fondly because he did help keep Newcastle in the Premier League
08:20 which of course led to the seal, which of course led to where we are now.
08:23 The one thing I would say is fans and as journalists we do have to get used to players leaving the club.
08:30 Under Mike Ashley it never really happened. We were sort of combined back in the day but they never really had these assets to sell.
08:36 Now they are getting these type of players in. You mentioned Bruno and Isak. I'm not saying the guys are going to sell them for one minute
08:42 very soon but they are the type of players where Real Madrid, Barcelona, they are the types of teams that are going to come sniffing around at some point.
08:49 They have just got to accept that players will want to leave and the club will have to cash in on these at times.
08:55 It is going to be a shame to see St Maxim gone and not at the club next year but as we have said for the last few minutes,
09:01 it is probably the right move at the right time.
09:04 I think that Ben Arfa comparison is an interesting one. I probably agree with you.
09:10 I think Arfa in terms of role, quality and end product was probably superior to St Maxim.
09:18 But dribbling in terms of pace, explosive, being explosive St Maxim probably edges it.
09:25 I would argue Ben Arfa was playing in a much better side than what St Maxim was.
09:31 St Maxim were very much the bright spark at a dark time for Newcastle.
09:36 I think history will look back on his time at the club very kindly.
09:41 I could speak for all fans in saying thank you Alan for your service to Newcastle United because you played a big part in getting the club to where they are today.
09:53 Where Newcastle are today is in America.
09:56 On Tuesday night, before jetting off to the United States, they played Rangers at Ibrox, a 2-1 win.
10:04 Goals from Miguel Almiron and Harrison Ashby, two wins from two in pre-season.
10:10 Joe, what were your thoughts on that game?
10:13 It was good. It was a good run out against Rangers.
10:18 I'm not going to lie, I expected more from Rangers.
10:21 I know it was pre-season, I thought there might be a little bit more of a test in Newcastle, dominated.
10:25 Especially in that first half, they were all over Rangers.
10:28 But I was really impressed with Sandro Tonali. I thought he was excellent.
10:32 I love it when a player just gets involved and he seemed to want to be involved with everything they did.
10:37 He's similar to Bruno in that mould for me. He wants to be on the ball, he wants to be tackling.
10:41 He's not afraid of putting a tackle. I thought he was really good in his first game.
10:46 The pass he did for Anderson to settle by Almiron was brilliant.
10:50 That finish by Almiron, I saw it back and it's just the way he takes it.
10:54 He just slots it, he doesn't put any power on it.
10:56 He just puts it in the corner. It was a great first half.
11:00 The second half, they did slow down. Unsurprisingly, they didn't need to exert themselves.
11:05 It was just a pre-season game. The goal was a sloppy goal to concede.
11:09 But then, right at the end, Isak, again, just getting a bit of space on the left.
11:14 Finding a tiny little gap, putting that cross in. It was a great finish by Ashby.
11:18 Overall, it was a good run out and it was a good place to beat Ibrox.
11:23 That was my first visit at Ibrox. It was a different atmosphere, especially being testimonial.
11:28 It was probably something that Eddie Howard would have taken a lot from.
11:31 I think that going to America on the back of playing Gateshead and Rangers,
11:35 it would have sounded like a good start to have three very competitive games against Premier League opposition.
11:41 It was a good occasion, like you say, the testimonial. 8,000 away fans there.
11:46 You obviously had a different perspective from me in the away end.
11:51 It felt like, maybe not a direct comparison, but maybe a little preview of those European nights we're going to have next season in the Champions League.
12:01 Did you feel that way watching it from the away end?
12:05 Yes, it was. As I said, it was a different atmosphere.
12:09 It was an away game, but when you're being around 8,000 other fans, it's almost a bit like a home game.
12:14 But then with the pre-season vibes, I think it was just a nice place to be in.
12:18 As you say, it gives you a little vision of this could be Newcastle in a couple of months' time.
12:23 There's a likelihood they can't get Rangers, and that would be a hell of a trip for anyone who gets to go to that one.
12:29 It is an exciting few months ahead for Newcastle.
12:33 I think that the biggest thing was the fact that they came away with that game with no injuries, no real injuries,
12:38 and the fact that they can go to America with their pretty much full squad, other than Joe Linton,
12:43 who was hopefully joined in a couple of days and a week's time.
12:47 It was a good run out for the team, and I was impressed by what I saw.
12:52 Joe Linton, yet another feature so far this pre-season.
12:56 International duty and the extended break prevented him at Gateshead.
13:00 Then at Rangers, visa issue, a delay getting his visa has stopped him from travelling with the rest of the squad to the United States.
13:09 No update on that initially, from the club at least, but the hope is that he'll join the rest of the squad in the United States
13:18 for the Premier League summer series, which will see them face Chelsea, Aston Villa and Brighton.
13:24 But just on the Rangers game and the Gateshead game to a degree, we've seen Newcastle 90 minutes,
13:31 they've played twice now, we've seen a lot of players involved, a lot of young lads.
13:36 Is there anyone who has particularly impressed you? You mentioned Sandro Tonali,
13:40 but anyone other than that who you're liking the look of in the early stages of pre-season?
13:45 I think for me it was good to see Elliot Anderson and Lewis Miley then too, in particular,
13:50 a fair amount of game time. We've seen Anderson in bits over last season and Miley obviously right at the end of the season against Chelsea.
13:56 But it was nice to see them too, playing major roles.
13:59 I think they're going to have, not a major role to play this year, because I don't expect that we're starting week in, week out,
14:05 but with all these games coming up, they're going to have to be relied on. It was good to see them.
14:10 They didn't look out of place at all. Obviously Elliot Anderson's more a cuts on the first team,
14:14 but especially Lewis Miley, he looked very solid in that middle of that park.
14:17 I've seen a lot of praise for Alex Murphy as well. He's played well in defence.
14:22 So it's nice to see all these youngsters stepping up and actually not looking out of place in this team.
14:27 And given how a couple of selection headaches, or even Eddie Howe knows in the future
14:32 that he can rely on these players to come in and do a job for his team.
14:36 Yeah, I think Elliot Anderson, you make a good point.
14:39 I got the assist for the opening goal at Rangers and obviously scored at Gateshead over the weekend.
14:46 So I think it's a big season ahead for him. I spoke to him after the Gateshead game and he said he's not,
14:53 he wants to be part of the first team. He knows what he needs to do to get regular starts.
14:58 He only got a handful of starts last season, majority of them coming in the cup.
15:03 And he knows he needs more goals, more assists. He only got one assist last season.
15:07 And that came on the final day at Chelsea. So he knows what he has to do.
15:12 I think he does have an important role to play. He won't be leaving on loan,
15:17 despite there being no shortage of interest if Newcastle were to make him available.
15:22 But I think Lewis Miley is an interesting one as well. 17 years old, midfielder.
15:28 And I think you're right, he's played twice now and not looked at all out of place,
15:33 which is some going for such a young lad. And I think he's of that age now,
15:38 he's almost maybe too young to go out on loan. I think it would benefit him to stay involved in Newcastle,
15:45 given the three games a week for pretty much throughout the first half of the season.
15:51 It would benefit to keep him involved and maybe use him in the Carabao Cup,
15:57 things like that, and give him the odd run out in the Premier League.
16:00 And obviously he fits the home-grown quota as well for the Champions League as well.
16:04 So I think the young lads have largely impressed so far.
16:09 I think Alex Murphy, like you say, is another one. And Harrison Ashby,
16:13 first time we've really had a chance to look at him in a Newcastle shirt.
16:17 Signed from West Ham in January, never really got a sniff, named on the bench once or twice.
16:22 But I think he brings a bit of pace, a bit of energy. But he is one player,
16:27 his header was good too, but he is one player who realistically you could see going out on loan,
16:33 depending on what happens with the likes of Javier Mankiw, Emil Kraft, who Mankiw could leave as well.
16:39 But yeah, looking ahead, Newcastle currently in the United States
16:44 and would expect Harvey Barnes to join them out there, Joe Litton, hopefully, pending that visa.
16:53 But after two good run outs so far, this is sort of where the real pre-season starts for Newcastle, Joe,
17:02 in terms of the up against Premier League opposition. We'll start to get a real feel.
17:06 It's not just about fitness anymore. You want that quality to start shining through.
17:10 Absolutely. Yeah, 100 percent, especially with that game against Aston Villa,
17:15 obviously with the first game of the season as well. That's going to be a real test.
17:19 And you're right, you can't look too much at the pre-season results.
17:22 Newcastle might give you 5-0 at the weekend, it makes no difference.
17:25 But I think that you do want to get some confidence going into the season.
17:30 And as you say, there's no better teams to play, really, than three of the teams who are going to be challenging for Europe this year.
17:35 There's no doubt about it that Aston Villa, Brighton and Chelsea, who they're going to play in America,
17:40 are all going to be in and around those top 6-7 positions.
17:45 So it'll be a good test for Newcastle. It'll be one that it'll be interesting to see what Eddie Howe does.
17:51 You'll see he rotated very heavily from Gateshead to Rangers, and 6 or 7 subs at half-time.
17:56 So it'll be interesting to see what teams he puts out in them games and what sort of,
18:00 if they give any indication of what his strongest team will be next year.
18:02 Because I think we could probably sit here and maybe name 7 or 8 players that we think will start that Aston Villa game in August.
18:09 But there's probably 3 or 4 spots up for grabs and that could be any one.
18:14 And the best time to impress, for these players to impress, who maybe aren't guaranteed a starting spot,
18:18 is obviously against Aston Villa on Sunday and then Chelsea and Brighton next week.
18:22 Yeah, definitely. And like we've touched on, Eddie Howe has brought over a couple of the young lads too, that we've mentioned before.
18:29 So you'd expect they would bolster the squad and potentially have an opportunity to break in as well.
18:35 But yeah, there's probably, like you say, 3 or 4 first-team starting positions up for grabs.
18:40 I think Anthony Gordon's another player who has come back fresh and full of confidence from the Euros,
18:47 winning that, winning Player of the Tournament. And it's a big season ahead for him as well.
18:52 You're looking at St Maxim and leaving, Harvey Barnes is coming in, but it's a big one ahead for Anthony Gordon.
19:00 A big season in early signs, at least second half at Rangers. He's a player full of confidence at the moment.
19:07 Yeah, I was going to say, he definitely looked like he'd sort of risen in confidence.
19:11 Obviously, he had a fantastic Euros, but it was the little moment where he did that little step over in the box and breezed past the defender.
19:17 And you just look at that, and he probably wouldn't have tried that last year, or he might have tried it and got tapped.
19:21 But he just seems like a new player this year. And it's great. And it's a great problem for Eddie Howe now to have.
19:27 Really, he's probably got, if he's going to play that 4-3-3, you know, with two wingers and striker,
19:31 he's probably got 4 or 5 players who will want them three starting spots, you know, left wing, right wing, up front.
19:37 So it'll be interesting to see what he does with Gordon. Eddie Howe talked about his versatility,
19:43 and he was a good thing for the club to have. So he definitely impressed me on Tuesday night.
19:49 And someone that I think lots of fans are really excited to see how he gets on over the next few weeks and then in the beginning of the season.
19:55 Yeah, definitely. Big season ahead for him and £45 million from Everton.
20:00 There's an expectation, but he is still a young lad, only turned 22 earlier this year.
20:05 So positive signs, at least. Hopefully, he can have a good season ahead for Newcastle.
20:12 Talking about players coming and joining the squad in the United States, one player looking likely to leave the squad and fly back to England is Carl Dorlo.
20:23 Close to agreeing to move to Bournemouth Premier League club, staying in the Premier League.
20:28 Newcastle obviously asking a few million pounds for him and looks like they've got it.
20:33 So in terms of the goalkeeper situation, we needed a goalkeeper to leave, really, Joe.
20:38 Five senior goalkeepers on the books, and it looks like Carl Dorlo is going to be at least the first one to leave.
20:46 Yeah, it's not really a surprise. I think Dorlo seemed to be the one that might leave.
20:52 He impressed at Hull last year in the second half of the season. It would be a shame to see him go.
20:57 He's been a great servant since joining the club. Obviously, he went initially back on Nottingham Forest, but he's been brilliant.
21:02 He'll always have them two penalty saves against Nottingham Forest. He's got a great chant.
21:06 And to be fair, he was a brilliant understudy of Martin De Braffica when he got injured a few seasons ago.
21:12 So again, if he goes, he'll go with nothing but fond memories. But yeah, five goalkeepers was too much.
21:20 It was interesting. I was surprised. Carius signed a new deal. I thought he might have had some offers elsewhere.
21:25 But it's clear that he's impressed during his time at the club. It's clear that the club have been impressed by him.
21:31 And it just leaves Martin De Braffica's future really up in the air. He was obviously at Rangers.
21:36 He seemed pretty with the group at the end there. He was in the middle of the group.
21:41 Obviously, he didn't feature, but he was there. So it'll be interesting to see his future.
21:45 But I think Eddie Howe, much like he said, he wants two strong start of the XI's.
21:50 And that obviously means he wants two strong goalkeepers. And Nick Pork will be the number one.
21:55 And there's probably not many better number twos than Martin De Braffica in the Premier League. Would you agree?
22:00 Yeah, yeah. I think Martin De Braffica is another one who falls into the category.
22:05 Similar to St Maximin, he's helped during some of the darkest times and kept Newcastle in the Premier League almost single-handedly at times.
22:13 So I think he's one who certainly has a legacy at Newcastle should he leave.
22:19 And we've already, I guess, touched upon it this time last year or at least September last year,
22:25 just after he joined Manchester United on loan when we all thought was the end of his Newcastle career.
22:31 But he's come back and whether he leaves again, I think he's the type of player who will want first-team football.
22:38 He's probably so used to that in Newcastle to then lose it.
22:43 And then Newcastle have the joint best defensive record in the Premier League.
22:47 Nick Pork keeps so many clean sheets. It's probably as much as it's good for the side and as much as I'm sure he's happy for Nick Pork,
22:53 it's probably dented his ego slightly and he'll be potentially looking elsewhere, looking at options,
23:01 because Wylie obviously speaks very highly of the club and Champions League football as an incentive.
23:10 Being one of three, four goalkeepers, Nick Pork's the clear first choice.
23:16 But then after that, it's him and Loris Karius. Whether you want to be involved in that, basically being a training goalkeeper
23:23 when you're 34 years old, you're coming to the end of your career, I'm not sure.
23:28 So I wouldn't be surprised to see Mark Dubravka leave.
23:32 And I'm speculating here, but maybe that is part of the reason why Loris Karius agreed a new deal at the club,
23:40 because maybe he's now the new second choice goalkeeper who will get the opportunities in the Carabao Cup,
23:48 potential some European games as well. So we'll see how that unfolds.
23:54 I'd be sad to see Mark Dubravka go as I was last summer, but ultimately it's that progress Newcastle have made
24:02 and it's not making the side any worse should he leave.
24:06 So that's one potential outgoing I can see.
24:11 And I'm sure we'll see a few more, the likes of Jeff Hendrick, Isaac Hayden, Brian Fraser, players like that,
24:18 who Newcastle just simply need off the wage books to free up that financial fair play,
24:24 which has restricted them quite a bit so far this summer.
24:27 Eddie Howe spoke about it at length and we need to get rid of players ultimately to free up
24:34 that space in the transfer market and wages are a big part of that.
24:39 So we'll see how things unfold from here. We've got Harvey Barnes one foot through the door, more or less two.
24:47 We're looking at Tino Liverimento is another one the club are keeping an eye on.
24:52 I don't know what you think about him, Joe. He's looking like the most realistic next signing,
24:58 but as we know, signings can sort of pop up from anywhere.
25:02 But in terms of Liverimento or right back, considering Ashby, Emile Craft, Kieran Trippie,
25:07 obviously first choice, Javier Mancio. Is this a signing?
25:12 If it's the reported £20-25 million, you'd want to see Newcastle do?
25:17 I think so. He seems like the ideal profile really for Eddie Howe type side, where they are right now.
25:23 He's young, as he mentioned, young. He's played in the Premier League before.
25:28 Obviously, he got a bad injury, which kept him out of action for about a year.
25:32 So that'll be something that he has to overcome. But he showed everything that's happened that he's got the makings to be a Premier League player.
25:38 Obviously, he was at the boots of Chelsea left for first team football, as many do.
25:43 So I think it's definitely someone that's worth Newcastle going for.
25:46 And with the versatility playing right back and left back, that'll be really helpful as well.
25:53 We've seen Trippie play left back, obviously. He's still got Dan Burnham at target.
25:56 So they can get three or four solid full backs there that Newcastle can rely on going into next year.
26:02 We talk about this. They just need to add depth and quality to that squad.
26:05 You mentioned it, the amount of games they're going to play. They need to keep adding depth and quality.
26:10 Liver and mental. He's a Premier League proven player.
26:13 If he can get over his injury, £20 million for a player who's got at least 10-15 years, hopefully, at the top of the game.
26:19 It should be a good deal. So I'm excited about that.
26:22 I think it's interesting to see that Newcastle sign on Harvey Barnes and then maybe Liver and mental as well.
26:27 It's very much a case of trying to get these deals from relegated teams that they can do on relatively cut price deals.
26:34 So it's good. It's an exciting time to be a Newcastle fan and covering the club.
26:40 Hopefully, it'll be an exciting transfer window between now and September.
26:43 Before we know it, the games will come thick and fast and the games are up on transfers.
26:48 I'm sure it'll be a busy couple of months.
26:50 Yeah, definitely. And I think Liver and mental probably will be viewed as should he come in the natural successor to Kieran Trippio,
26:58 who's obviously 33 later this year. So in terms of both England and Newcastle, if he were to come in.
27:07 So and as a player who has been injured, probably won't mind so much being that substitute,
27:15 not getting quite as many games as obviously Kieran Trippio and starting week in, week out.
27:22 But we'll have more on that as it develops. We'll have coverage of Newcastle in the United States over the next week or so as well,
27:31 where the play, as we say, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Brighton. So you can catch all that on the Shields Gazette website.
