00:00 (dramatic music)
00:02 - Another sprint or a surprise?
00:06 Anything's possible.
00:07 - Is it a van der Poel day?
00:10 - We will see.
00:12 There's a lot of things possible today.
00:14 - I like this kind of race.
00:18 There's a hard final, up and down.
00:21 So that's good for me.
00:22 - Will you have your eye on Wout Van Acht?
00:24 - I'm not wholly on him.
00:28 - I'm getting better and better during the race.
00:30 - The finish itself really suits me,
00:33 but it just depends how they race everything beforehand.
00:36 - The harder stages before the sprints
00:38 is always a bit better for me.
00:40 - I think today will be chaotic from the start.
00:43 - It's an exciting stage.
00:44 I really don't know how it's gonna turn out.
00:46 - This is your captain speaking.
00:54 - So, flat next to us is a Cone Pilot.
00:57 Flight to La Moche.
00:58 We'll take the seatbelt signed off shortly after takeoff.
01:03 We can make sure we're relaxed.
01:05 We'll be serving drinks today between 4 to 15
01:07 and 10 k's to go.
01:10 You shouldn't ride in the back of the peloton.
01:22 You will feel the wind definitely tail right hand side
01:27 and it's gonna strengthen the peloton a lot.
01:32 So don't start in the back.
01:35 Don't start in the back of the peloton.
01:38 Nobody.
01:39 - After a fast pace start, three riders got away.
01:45 Anthony De La Place for the third time on this tour,
01:47 Anthony Terges and Tim De Clercq
01:50 getting into the breakaway for once
01:51 rather than chasing it.
01:53 They quickly opened up a five minute gap
01:56 as things settled into the usual rhythm.
01:58 Mathieu van der Poel did try to shake things up
02:03 after the intermediate sprint,
02:04 tacking with a small group from the bunch.
02:07 But Jumbo Visma were clearly keen to set this one up
02:09 for Wout van Aert and soon closed the gap.
02:20 And then a moment of drama in the peloton,
02:22 a crash with devastating consequences.
02:25 - Oh, Cavendish down and this is not good news.
02:34 Cavendish is holding that right collarbone.
02:37 The end of the dream of the record
02:40 of 35 stage wins in a Tour de France.
02:43 - I've been my whole life like,
02:46 I start getting emotional if I talk too much about it.
02:50 - Mark Cavendish, the max missile,
02:53 matches Merckx, 34 wins in a Tour de France.
02:57 - It's given me the most incredible career,
03:00 the most incredible life, the most incredible memories.
03:03 - There's nobody can match the speed of this amazing kid.
03:07 - I know that you can only try
03:10 and we'll keep trying with everything we've got
03:13 and see what happens, but not just today's stage,
03:15 but every sprint opportunity we get.
03:18 (crowd cheering)
03:21 - After a day yesterday,
03:23 when he had everyone on their feet screaming at the screen,
03:26 thinking the max missile was about to hit 35.
03:30 Look at the face of Cavendish
03:34 and the realization that it's over.
03:38 Mark Cavendish has abandoned the Tour de France
03:42 on the road to La Moche.
03:46 Well, the show must go on
03:47 and Tergis was finally brought to heel
03:49 inside the last 10 kilometers.
03:51 It would be an uphill sprint
03:53 and certainly not one for the faint of heart.
03:55 - 53 kilometers an hour
04:00 as they make their way into the race finish,
04:02 way, way ahead of schedule.
04:04 - And it seems to be Galapin doing a big pull there
04:06 with Kirsch on the wheel and the Asper Stoeven.
04:08 Pedersen stuck to the wheel, but look again,
04:11 Cofidis moving up.
04:12 They did really well on that circuit in Nogaro.
04:16 Looking back, here come the team of Intermarche,
04:18 Circus Wonti, looking after the interests of Biniam Girmay.
04:23 Matty Moric moves forward in the colors of Bahrain.
04:26 On the front now, Cofidis looking after Brian Cockhardt.
04:29 It's 1,600 meters to go.
04:31 Nico, what comes up and where do we turn?
04:34 - We turn at the first time,
04:36 just after the kilometer barrier,
04:37 you take the first left
04:39 and then you take straight away a second left at 800.
04:41 And this is the beginning of the climb
04:42 as Alex Kirsch takes the front.
04:44 He has Per Stoeven on the wheel,
04:45 Pedersen in turn, but just look at the speed
04:47 of the Destiny jump.
04:49 Lotto on the right.
04:51 - Underneath the red kite, 1,000 meters to go
04:55 on stage eight of the Tour de France.
04:57 Alex Kirsch on the front.
04:59 - And it just looks like
05:00 Van Der Poel has Philipsen on the wheel.
05:02 So it's going to be a different scenario
05:04 than what we expected this morning.
05:06 Most likely Van Der Poel is going to go with Philipsen.
05:08 - And it looks like the green jersey
05:10 is going to try and take his fourth win
05:12 in the Tour de France this year.
05:14 That would be incredible.
05:15 He'll have won 50% of the stages if that's the case.
05:19 Here's the climb now.
05:20 Kicks up a little bit downhill,
05:22 then up towards the finish line.
05:23 We're getting set, 500 meters to go.
05:26 Right in the center, it is the team of Jumbo-Visma.
05:30 UAE with Trentin, Christophe Laporte,
05:33 Wout Van Aert tucked in on the wheel.
05:35 Mathieu Van Der Poel is there,
05:37 but Philipsen is looking set.
05:39 Pedersen goes, Wout Van Aert,
05:41 Pedersen left-hand side,
05:43 Van Der Poel with Philipsen,
05:44 Van Der Poel, Mathieu Van Der Poel.
05:47 Here goes Pedersen,
05:48 Matt Pedersen is going for the finish line.
05:50 Jasper Philipsen looking to try
05:52 and win his fourth stage of the Tour.
05:54 It's a drag race all the way to the finish of stage eight,
05:58 and it's going to be a win.
06:00 Matt Pedersen wins the stage into La Merge.
06:04 - I won, but, oh man, it was a long sprint,
06:11 and this uphill kick was really painful.
06:14 So I was this close to sit down with 50 meters to go,
06:18 but I think Jasper had to do a pretty good sprint
06:22 to come from behind and make it that close as well.
06:25 So yeah, tough one,
06:27 but it doesn't matter if you win
06:29 with two meters or one centimeter.
06:31 - Pedersen taking his second stage victory
06:41 on the Tour de France,
06:42 and unlike last year when he won from a small breakaway,
06:45 the day in saw off some of the best guys in the world,
06:47 beating Philipsen and Van Aert
06:49 for his fourth win of the season.
06:51 Jumbo-Visma couldn't get the victory for Van Aert,
06:55 but they still have Wingergaard in yellow.
06:57 He's 25 seconds clear of Pogacar
06:59 before tomorrow's big showdown on the Puy de Dome.
07:02 Philipsen was finally beaten in a sprint
07:08 for the first time at this Tour,
07:10 but still snaffled 43 points towards that green jersey.
07:13 He's over 100 clear of Coccar,
07:15 with Pedersen moving up to third.
07:17 Paulus was able to take it nice and easy today,
07:22 but tomorrow is bound to shake things up
07:24 in the mountains classification.
07:26 Pogacar would no doubt love
07:30 another prestigious stage victory tomorrow
07:32 as the race continues,
07:34 but sadly without one of the biggest legends
07:36 in Tour de France history.
07:38 (upbeat music)
07:40 - It's a real shame.
07:49 I think everybody want to see him go for one more win.
07:53 - I would have loved to see him winning the 35th
07:56 and taking the record by himself
07:59 instead of having to share it.
08:02 - It's so sad that such a legend
08:04 have to finish the Tour like this.
08:07 - Yeah, I wish all the best for Mark
08:08 and hopefully I can do the last race he's gonna do as well
08:13 to honor a legend.
08:17 (crowd chattering)
08:20 (crowd laughing)
08:23 (upbeat music)
08:25 [BLANK_AUDIO]
