00:48 - The hippopotamus is one of the most aggressive
00:51 and ferocious creatures in the animal kingdom.
00:53 They are a formidable opponent for most animals
01:04 due to their size, strength, and aggression.
01:07 Hippos are dangerous creatures
01:16 that have killed more people than any other species,
01:19 including crocodiles.
01:21 The common hippo has extremely thick skin
01:30 that can be several inches thick and as tough as rubber,
01:33 making it difficult to pierce their hides.
01:43 They also have a strong bite force due to their big teeth.
01:46 A hippo's canines are self-sharpening and over a foot long,
01:58 with a pressure of around 450 pounds per square inch
02:02 at each one.

02:06 Nile crocodiles, lions, and spotted hyenas
02:21 are known to prey on young hippos.
02:32 However, due to their aggression and size,
02:35 adult hippos are not usually preyed upon by other animals.
02:39 In fight rhino with hippo, hippo is much more aggressive.
02:52 Rhino has an impressive charge.
03:00 But in close combat, the enormous gape
03:03 of the hippopotamus's mouth probably gives it the advantage
03:06 over the long horn of the rhino.
03:08 Hippos have a lot of ways to protect themselves.
03:16 They run at top speeds of about 30 miles per hour,
03:23 which is surprising despite their size.
03:26 (dramatic music)
03:28 They don't usually flee a war
03:35 because they can take on most predators.
03:55 They use their teeth to pierce the bodies of other animals
03:59 to take advantage of their large size.
04:01 These extremely aggressive animals are unpredictable
04:08 and can attack without warning.
04:10 When hippos and lions fight,
04:20 the hippo generally comes out on top.
04:24 If a pride of lions attacks a single hippo,
04:27 an exception can be made.
04:29 But then, the hippo is much bigger,
04:32 has big teeth to protect itself,
04:35 and can move quickly on land or in water.
04:37 In hippos and crocodiles fight,
04:46 hippos are quite capable of defending themselves
04:49 against crocodiles.
04:53 Even though the crocs have sharp teeth
04:56 and a stronger bite force,
04:57 it's difficult for them to pierce the hippo's tough hide.
05:01 In contrast, the lower canines of the hippo
05:07 can bite right through a crocodile.
05:09 Male Cape buffalo weight is 300 to 900 kilogram.
05:22 Male hippopotamus weight is 1500 to 1800 kilogram.
05:26 However, here is the case we don't see
05:31 hippos and buffaloes fight very often.
05:34 Obviously, because they live in different environments
05:42 but also because the buffalo never challenges hippos.

06:42 Cape buffalo are called black death for a reason.
06:51 They kill about 200 people a year.
06:56 They have killed more game hunters
07:00 than any other animal in Africa.
07:05 But statistically, hippos are much more dangerous
07:09 in that they kill more people than any other animal
07:11 in Africa, including the predators.
07:14 At over double the weight with a short temper,
07:21 the hippo attacking first.
07:22 But these two animals rarely engage in deadly battles.
07:31 (dramatic music)
07:34 In hippos and rhino fight,
07:42 both animals are highly territorial
07:44 but the hippo is much more aggressive.
07:46 When rhinos fight, they normally don't amount
07:53 to more than some horn clashing and a little urine spray.
07:57 (dramatic music)
07:59 You might be surprised,
08:23 but the elephant is likely to win from hippo.
08:26 (elephant trumpeting)
08:29 They are much larger than a hippo
08:37 and can knock the hippo over and stomp it.
08:40 The elephants may also attack en masse to protect their own,
08:54 often encountering a single enraged hippo.

09:00 Hyenas are carnivores.
09:17 (hyena screeching)
09:20 They either hunt on their own or scavenge
09:27 from the kills of other larger animals.
09:30 They typically hunt wildebeests, gazelles and young hippos.
09:38 However, due to their aggression and size,
09:43 adult hippos are not usually preyed upon by hyena.
