Reddit CEO Defends API Fees

  • last year
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman is doubling down on the recent API changes on the platform, as many Reddit communities have gone private in protest of the new API pricing structure. Huffman stated that providing free API access to all third-party developers is no longer feasible, as some developers are making significant profits while costing Reddit millions in infrastructure costs. The company has made exceptions for accessibility and critical apps, including Pushshift, but popular apps like Apollo will need to start paying for access. He acknowledged that some Reddit users wouldn't be satisfied as their favorite third-party apps may shut down, citing issues with the cluttered interface of Reddit's official app. However, he assured that the company is working to improve the user experience and bridge the gaps between their app and third-party apps.
