00:00 Gentlemen, I've already given you your instructions.
00:02 Belt lines look great.
00:03 Obey my commands at all times.
00:06 Protect yourself at all times.
00:07 I demand a clean bout.
00:09 Touch gloves, step back, here we go.
00:11 - David Hartman, the third man in the ring tonight.
00:15 Christina Pontcher and Tim Bradley here
00:17 on the call with you for this one once again.
00:19 Joe Sean, Sean Time James taking on Javier Martinez.
00:23 Martinez the slight favorite,
00:25 according to the betting odds on this one,
00:27 but Joe Sean James also undefeated
00:29 in fighting about an hour away
00:31 from his hometown of Sacramento.
00:33 - Christina, he's coming off a great win too
00:37 against another undefeated fighter.
00:39 So full of confidence, I'm sure.
00:41 - And what was an upset in that one.
00:43 - Exactly.
00:44 - Looking to make that back to back
00:46 as you see Martinez in that Southpaw stance.
00:50 Wearing the colors of Mexico with the red, white and green.
00:55 Joe Sean James, 24 years old,
00:58 7-0 with four knockouts,
01:00 has a seven inch reach advantage
01:03 in this fight against Martinez.
01:05 - And he's using it well right now
01:06 and he's getting on his jab right away.
01:09 Which you usually don't see in the open stance battle.
01:12 Southpaw versus Orthodox, it's all about foot placement.
01:17 Of course you guys heard me time and time again,
01:19 I always tell you, you wanna line up that backhand
01:22 by getting that outside foot, the lead foot outside
01:25 the lead foot of the Southpaw and vice versa.
01:28 Same thing for the Southpaw.
01:30 But the battle again,
01:32 is fighting for position with that lead hand.
01:34 You see him starting to fence now, that lead hand.
01:37 But the right hand is the key
01:38 or the backhand is the key for both guys.
01:42 - See Martinez trying to get inside those long jabs
01:47 through the middle, but James getting off first
01:50 in a lot of these exchanges.
01:51 - He is, he has a quicker hands and his shots are shorter.
01:55 You see right there inside the pocket,
01:57 James quick shots down to the body.
02:01 Didn't really load up with it, but they landed
02:04 and they were effective.
02:05 - Javier Martinez fighting out
02:09 of the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy.
02:12 So you know he's getting tough sparring.
02:14 It's one of the best gyms in the entire country.
02:17 You don't go there and get easy work, that's for sure.
02:19 And he's had some great preparation
02:21 to get him ready for this fight.
02:22 Had some issues with his shoulder after his last fight,
02:24 but says he went to a special doctor.
02:28 A doctor in the hood is exactly what he said.
02:31 - They're the best ones sometimes, man.
02:32 - A doctor in the hood and not his words.
02:35 And got his shoulder feeling right.
02:37 And he's back here feeling a hundred percent confident
02:42 for this opportunity, says, "The better my opponent,"
02:44 as he lands a good left hand to the gut of James,
02:47 "The better my opponent, the better I perform."
02:49 - Oh, you can feel it.
02:50 You know, when you're in there, you can feel the skill.
02:52 You can feel the IQ, you know, how they're gauging distance,
02:56 how you're gauging distance when you're in there.
03:00 And you can see that Martinez,
03:01 he definitely respects Jones' power and speed and technique.
03:05 So he's being choosy right now.
03:07 He's playing a little bit of defense,
03:08 cat and mouse right now.
03:10 Sitting back, he's allowing him to work and get comfortable,
03:12 but he's paying attention where he wants to go,
03:15 and that's downstairs to the body.
03:17 - And setting up a good left hand right there.
03:18 - That's what he's trying to set up,
03:18 the left hand over the top.
03:20 - He sure is, and it's open for him
03:22 on some of these exchanges as James kind of drops
03:25 that right hand a little bit low.
03:26 - This is for the bell, guys.
03:27 - Good, solid start though for both fighters
03:29 here in round one.
03:30 (bell rings)
03:37 - Time!
03:38 - Loading up.
03:38 - The co-main event, there's one half, has arrived.
03:44 Jason Maloney ranked number one
03:46 in the bantamweight division,
03:47 looking to capture that coveted world title.
03:51 This is his third go-round, and likely, in his words,
03:53 his last opportunity.
03:55 Nice little greeting there from his top-ranked bosses,
03:59 if you will, and he's taking on Vincent Astrolabio.
04:02 That's our co-main event scheduled for 12 rounds
04:04 for the vacant WBO world championship,
04:06 and there is Vincent, representing General Santos City
04:10 in the Philippines, ranked number two.
04:11 I love when we get a vacant belt
04:12 and we actually get the number one guy
04:14 against the number two guy.
04:15 What a concept!
04:16 - Hey, that's great!
04:18 I like that.
04:19 You know, boxing don't always get it right,
04:20 but we got it right tonight, baby.
04:23 - You're looking forward to that one, I know.
04:24 - Yes, I am.
04:25 I think it's a fantastic fight.
04:26 I think that both guys, see, the great part about it is
04:28 is that they built themselves back up.
04:30 You know, they both have losses on their resume,
04:33 and that shows you that a loss is not detrimental.
04:36 You know, you can bounce back if you want to.
04:38 You get it?
04:39 So these guys have done that,
04:40 and now they're facing each other,
04:42 and I think they're gonna put it all on the line tonight.
04:45 - I'm looking forward to that.
04:45 That's still to come, of course,
04:47 still to come on the undercard,
04:48 Ruben Villa and Gabe Flores Jr.
04:50 Two Bay Area natives, Stockton and Salinas,
04:55 representing here tonight
04:56 before we get to those championship fights.
04:58 Sacramento's own, Joe Sean James, in the ring now.
05:03 Pretty solid start there for him.
05:05 - Good hand speed.
05:07 Again, he's not telegraphing his punches.
05:09 He's shooting them straight from the shoulders,
05:11 from the hand position,
05:12 and they're getting to the mark quick.
05:14 That's it.
05:15 And they're solid shots, because you don't see,
05:17 you see what Martinez is doing.
05:19 He's covering up.
05:19 He don't want any of that.
05:20 He don't want to touch any of that,
05:22 or be touched by any of that stuff.
05:25 So I'm looking for him to counter.
05:29 That's what I'm looking for Martinez to do,
05:30 but at this moment, he's not doing a whole lot of it.
05:33 - Let him go.
05:34 - And he did say he does have a lot of respect for James.
05:40 He says he feels like he is gonna be a tough opponent,
05:42 but that's when he told us,
05:43 we'll see, oh, the best of him.
05:45 And that was the best shot of the fight so far.
05:47 At the left hand of Martinez.
05:51 - Four mechanics right there with the guards.
05:56 Dropped his hands, James, just for a brief second.
05:59 Now he needs a little window of opportunity
06:01 for a punch to get in there.
06:03 - And that was the shot, Tim, you were talking about,
06:05 that he was looking to set up.
06:05 And I think he did a good job of setting that up too,
06:07 because he's thrown it low a couple of times,
06:09 down to the body,
06:10 and then got him to keep that hand down and brought it up.
06:13 - Well, you can tell that he's watched video,
06:14 because James has been down from left hooks.
06:18 So when you see that, you being a fighter,
06:20 you're saying, okay, I'm coming from the southpaw stance.
06:23 He leans back like that, or he doesn't cover well.
06:27 He brings that back foot, or that back hand forward
06:31 just a tad bit, leaving a little window for opportunity.
06:33 - Hooking that lead left hand is James,
06:39 and then Martinez answers with a hook of his own.
06:41 (grunting)
06:44 See how important it is to get your foot on the outside.
06:56 See right there, James got his foot caught up,
06:58 and he had to lift his foot to go over
07:03 the lead foot of Martinez.
07:11 - Good shots right there.
07:12 That body work is good.
07:13 He's paying attention downstairs.
07:16 That can pay some good dividends
07:17 down the stretch in this fight.
07:19 Start slowing the guy down, start taking his legs,
07:21 start taking some of his power away from him.
07:24 - Some good work as well from James,
07:28 but sometimes those combinations are becoming
07:31 a little mundane, a little predictable
07:32 for James, in my opinion.
07:40 - Back to the Martinez corner.
07:45 Robert Garcia Jr.
07:48 (speaking in foreign language)
07:52 - The only thing you need to do now
07:59 is you need to be working the body more.
08:00 That round you were looking too much for that left hand.
08:02 You're looking for too much up here.
08:04 - Let's see how he set this up right here.
08:05 Martinez stepping inside.
08:07 You see him at mid-range.
08:08 He slipped his head outside.
08:10 Nice little shot downstairs,
08:12 but then you see James right there lifting his head up,
08:14 looking for an uppercut.
08:16 Missed off the mark, but that left hand right there
08:20 from Martinez didn't miss that chin.
08:22 Here it is again.
08:26 Throwing the uppercut.
08:26 He sees the opening, boom.
08:29 Beautiful shot right there.
08:30 And you know, you gotta give credit to James.
08:31 He took it very, very well.
08:33 He didn't seem fazed at all or buzzed by that shot.
08:37 (speaking in foreign language)
08:40 - Garcia Jr. telling Martinez that he wants him
08:44 to go a little bit more to the body
08:46 and not get so reliant on that left hand.
08:48 Sometimes you hit a guy with a good shot with left.
08:50 That's the one that you continue to look for
08:51 time and time again.
08:52 Wants him to still vary up his assaults.
08:56 - Yeah, pattern recognition is a real thing
08:58 in the boxing ring.
08:59 You start recognizing the pattern
09:01 and sequences of your opposition
09:03 and you can set them up, set traps.
09:05 And that's what we have in the main event tonight.
09:07 You know, Janabek, that's what he does so well.
09:09 He sets traps off the front foot.
09:11 You know, he gets his guys in these disadvantageous
09:14 positions and he takes advantage of them
09:16 with good footwork and technique and combinations.
09:19 What I like about James, he's just so smooth,
09:28 fluent, just fluent.
09:29 You know, he makes some mistakes.
09:31 He sits at mid range a little bit too long
09:33 where he can pick up his feet
09:34 and he can move a different direction, you know.
09:37 But I just like how smooth and calm he is all the time.
09:40 Cool, smooth, cool, and collected.
09:42 - Especially for a fighter with only seven
09:45 professional fights and he did have a solid
09:47 amateur career, but it was choppy.
09:49 He was around in 2014, around in 2017.
09:52 And you know, he's been pro since only 2021.
09:55 So off and on in terms of his boxing career,
09:58 but it looks like it suits him well.
10:02 - Yes.
10:03 - If that makes sense.
10:03 - They just wear it well.
10:05 They are natural fighters and he's done well
10:08 for himself so far.
10:09 Javier Martinez coming up with the head
10:16 a little bit on that clinch on the inside,
10:21 down to the body with the left hand
10:23 is exactly what his trainer was calling for.
10:25 - A little bit low with that body shot.
10:27 Referee was on the other side, he didn't see that.
10:31 (crowd cheering)
10:34 - See, another thing you notice with James is,
10:37 is that even though he is a taller and he has longer arms,
10:40 he still can fight in the inside.
10:42 You know, at times the problem is he lifts up
10:47 and he stands straight up and he pulls straight back.
10:50 And then that allows Martinez to just extend
10:52 with his arms and be able to land his offense.
10:54 But nice little turnout by there, right there.
10:56 Pivot by James.
10:59 - Hands go.
11:00 - Martinez once again, looking to land that big left hand
11:07 on that south paw position.
11:08 There's the jab down low, then back up top,
11:19 effective shot there lands.
11:20 - Yeah, just need more consistency, I think from Martinez.
11:23 - With his offensive arsenal, sure.
11:25 - Yes, yes, more consistency.
11:27 Like going down to the body like that.
11:29 You know, a lot of the times you're seeing James
11:34 start the sequences and also finish these sequences.
11:36 And you have no clue how these judges are scoring this match.
11:39 Let's talk about some setups right here.
11:48 Just going to the lab with Janabec, baby.
11:50 You know, he's an excellent trap setter.
11:53 Check this jab out right here.
11:54 This is a bait jab, this is what I call it, bait jab.
11:57 Flicks that jab out there, see,
11:58 he's trying to get a response.
11:59 Then you see him step right here.
12:02 But then just look at the right hook get thrown.
12:04 Oh, nope.
12:07 I saw that, he took a picture right there for the camera.
12:10 Now here's the trap I'm talking about.
12:11 Same sequence, you see the flick jab right there.
12:13 Then you're going to see a feint.
12:15 You see the jab right there, co-out, feint.
12:18 What happens?
12:19 His opponent does what?
12:20 Drops that back hand and throws a check hook
12:22 at the same time.
12:23 This time he fills that hole.
12:25 Beautiful, beautiful setup.
12:27 And here's another trap set up by him.
12:30 Using the jab, flick jab, sees this man go backwards.
12:33 He says, "Ah, I don't like that distance.
12:35 Let me get a little bit closer."
12:37 This time I'll put my foot inside
12:39 and I'm going to shoot the jab
12:40 because that's what happens.
12:43 When you put your foot inside,
12:44 it lines up that jab perfectly.
12:45 He throws the jab and comes right behind it
12:47 with a straight left hand.
12:48 Beautiful, beautiful sequence right there.
12:50 My man is a great trap setter.
12:52 He's always thinking in the ring.
12:54 I like Janabek Alimhanallah very much, Christina.
12:59 Very much.
12:59 - Excellent job on that pronunciation as well.
13:02 - Well, you know, I don't always get it right.
13:04 - But we got to give you credit when you do.
13:05 - Well, thank you.
13:06 - That's what I'm talking about.
13:07 - I appreciate that.
13:08 - All right, that's coming up
13:09 in our main event later tonight.
13:10 The WBO middleweight world championship,
13:12 Janabek Alimhanallah taking on Stephen Butler.
13:15 But the segue to that was the traps
13:17 that you're seeing these fighters set tonight,
13:19 which is exactly what Janabek does
13:21 and these two fight in the same division.
13:23 - Yeah, and I like this position right here.
13:24 This is the dog camera right here.
13:27 And every now and then you will see James,
13:29 you see him spin out right there, nice little pivot.
13:31 He'll get off on the angle,
13:32 but see his foot tied up on the inside.
13:34 This is the time where I say that Martinez
13:36 needs to step on the gas and let his hands go.
13:38 Stop loading up, just let the hands fly.
13:41 Oh my goodness.
13:42 - Little snuff, if you will, from Martinez.
13:45 - That's a little frustration.
13:47 And he's trying to get James off his game.
13:49 That's what he's trying to do.
13:50 And when you pick yourself up off the canvas like that,
13:52 when you're already exhausted,
13:54 you've been throwing punches, that gasses you out.
13:56 - Or makes you real upset,
13:58 which looks like James is trying to get some of that back.
14:01 He doesn't want to be embarrassed, if you will,
14:03 in front of his hometown crowd.
14:05 And these two decide to go head to head here in round four.
14:10 That's letting them work a little bit here on the inside.
14:13 - See, if that would have happened to me,
14:14 my dad would have been mad.
14:16 Don't let a man handle you like that.
14:18 You know, he don't like that, man.
14:21 You don't give any, ooh, that body shot hurt.
14:22 - Did you see that?
14:23 - That shot on the inside sure did.
14:25 That was nice.
14:28 Javier Martinez, though, still content right now
14:31 with standing in the pocket.
14:32 Now he's taking a walk for a second.
14:35 Right back to the body goes Martinez,
14:40 and a clash of heads there.
14:41 - Watch your heads, guys.
14:43 - That happens.
14:44 That happens with a southpaw versus a northodox.
14:46 - Fortunately, it doesn't look like a cut from either side.
14:48 - Ooh, another body shot right there.
14:50 Beautiful on the inside.
14:51 - Stop.
14:52 - Try to get a little sloppy now.
14:54 Both men starting to feel the pressure.
14:57 They're trying to take over this fight.
14:59 Lot of back and forth from both men.
15:02 No one seemingly has taken over this fight completely.
15:05 - You mentioned that, and I need to mention then,
15:08 this is the first eight rounder for Javier Martinez.
15:11 He's been fighting six rounders his last five fights,
15:15 and his second pro fight was actually a six rounder as well,
15:17 so taking those extra two rounds,
15:20 - Ooh, nice shot.
15:21 - Just like that, although he answers back
15:23 with a nice left hand.
15:24 These two are going toe to toe now.
15:25 - It's starting to heat up now, Christina.
15:27 - That little push down got things heated up here
15:30 in round four.
15:30 - Both guys are now finally settled down.
15:38 - Let's pull a bell.
15:40 - They're trying to execute their game plan now.
15:42 They see something.
15:43 They're standing still now,
15:45 inside the pocket, trading shots.
15:47 - Time.
15:49 (crowd cheering)
15:51 - And that clash of heads we saw earlier in that round
15:57 did not open up a cut,
15:58 but it looks like it has got some serious swelling
16:01 going on the left eyebrow and brow bone of Javier Martinez.
16:05 I'm sure we'll get a look at that now,
16:07 and I think the doctor might be coming over
16:09 to take a look at it.
16:10 The swelling on the top of the left eyebrow
16:12 is getting real big there.
16:13 - Ooh, I'm glad they got the insulin on there.
16:16 That's what it's all about.
16:17 Who is in there?
16:18 - It's like Basil.
16:19 Yeah, Basil know what he's doing.
16:20 It's all about the pressure.
16:21 You gotta put the pressure on that eye
16:23 to stop that bleeding.
16:24 - Maestro mechanic Basil is in the corner working on that.
16:28 - You see that right there?
16:30 You can chill with that, right?
16:31 They're gonna take a point away.
16:32 - They're gonna take a bunch of punches up, all right?
16:33 - They're gonna take a point away next,
16:34 and then do some shit like that, all right?
16:36 (speaking in foreign language)
16:47 - I'd like to take this opportunity
16:49 while we're listening to some Spanish,
16:50 and I cannot translate nearly as well
16:52 as our fellow colleague who is not here with us tonight,
16:55 Bernardo Osuna.
16:56 You are missed, my friend,
16:57 but congratulations to your daughter, Sammy Osuna,
16:59 who graduated with honors from USC yesterday.
17:02 Well done to the whole Osuna family.
17:04 We miss you, my friend,
17:05 but congratulations to Sammy and to the whole fam.
17:09 - I can tell you one thing that I heard in that corner.
17:13 - Oh, go for it.
17:14 - He said, "Cuerpo."
17:15 That means stomach.
17:16 - That means body, yeah.
17:16 - Yep, stomach, body. - Absolutely.
17:19 - Look at you, Tim.
17:20 - Hey, look, look.
17:21 - Monaco would be so proud.
17:22 (Tim laughing)
17:24 - Gracias.
17:25 (all laughing)
17:27 Or you say, "Glacias."
17:28 (Tim laughing)
17:30 - Second half of the fight, starting here, round five.
17:32 This one's scheduled for eight.
17:33 Tim Bradley, Christina Paunch, you're here with you,
17:35 and told Martinez to watch the low blows,
17:39 as that one just grazes the belt, as I mentioned that,
17:43 in that break from the referee.
17:45 Nice chin check from James, got in on that guard.
17:49 - See, now, this is not James' fight right here,
17:52 in the inside.
17:53 It's not.
17:54 It's gonna favor Martinez.
17:55 Martinez is coming forward,
17:57 and any type of confidence Martinez can generate,
18:01 it's gonna push him more and more.
18:03 You know, if James wanna continue to control this fight,
18:05 he needs to control this fight on the outside,
18:07 where he has that reach advantage, and set up Martinez.
18:11 Not fighting Ruff-Als in the inside with him.
18:14 (crowd shouting)
18:16 - He was doing that effectively the first two rounds,
18:18 especially in that second round,
18:20 and got away from that a little bit.
18:22 - Yeah, it's harder to box, Christina.
18:24 It's harder to stay off your, on your back foot,
18:26 and do the right things, and stay mechanically tight,
18:29 and sharp with your punches.
18:31 It's easier to sit in the inside, tie up arms like that,
18:34 get a little breather, and then step back,
18:38 and try to land some shots on your opposition.
18:40 - And there's that stern warning once more.
18:43 You get the sense that maybe the next time that happens,
18:49 perhaps a point deduction coming Martinez' way,
18:52 but let's see.
18:54 - Them body shots are starting to pay dividends.
19:03 I'm starting to see James, he's starting to,
19:05 technique is starting to falter a bit.
19:09 Not as sharp as he was early on.
19:10 - There's a left hand that connects for Martinez,
19:14 and a lot more holding here.
19:16 That's evident to perhaps some of the fatigue
19:19 you saw setting in a little bit in that last round.
19:21 Martinez now being first on more of these exchanges.
19:28 - Exactly, 'cause he, that's how you know.
19:30 And he's caught a second wind now.
19:31 He's feeling like he's in his groove now.
19:33 He's starting to get his rhythm a little bit.
19:35 Oh, that was a nice move by James.
19:37 I haven't seen that in a while,
19:38 hitting right on the shoulder.
19:39 That's beautiful work right there.
19:42 That stuff hurts.
19:43 Look at him now, Christina.
19:45 (laughing)
19:47 - Good round.
19:54 - There's a look at Jason Maloney,
20:01 hanging out in his locker room,
20:02 coming up later tonight,
20:04 opening up the show on ESPN,
20:05 7 p.m. Pacific time in our co-main event.
20:07 ESPN's number three ranked Bantamweight
20:10 with that 25 and two record.
20:11 Getting an opportunity tonight to fight
20:13 for his third shot at a world title,
20:16 unsuccessful in the first two.
20:18 Let's take a look back at his last five fights,
20:20 his road to his first world title,
20:23 and then how he got here this evening.
20:25 It has not been an easy journey,
20:27 and he feels very fortunate to have had the opportunity now
20:29 to get one more in what he says he believes
20:31 is the final shot at a world title.
20:33 It started with that loss that Halloween night
20:36 during COVID in 2020 against Naoya Inoue
20:39 where he was knocked out.
20:40 Look, but you gotta take risks, right?
20:42 - It's Inoue, stop.
20:44 - And he says the same thing.
20:45 He learned a lot from that fight.
20:47 He knew he would have to be perfect,
20:48 but since then he's put together four straight wins
20:51 to get him to the opportunity to fight for a world title
20:55 once again tonight.
20:56 - Look, he is the definition of, you know,
20:59 resiliency, staying mentally strong.
21:02 You know, I admire guys that, you know,
21:06 can take this beat and bounce back and get in position.
21:09 - And he's gotten better.
21:11 - And also, of course, but that's what it's all about.
21:14 That's what it's all about.
21:15 Like we all, we always, you know,
21:17 a lot of fighters today, they just wanna protect that O.
21:19 I wanna protect the O, that's it.
21:21 I understand that to a certain point and degree
21:24 throughout your career, but fighting the best,
21:27 that's what it always boils down to.
21:29 That's why we love sports in general.
21:32 - And a lot of times I hear you fighters tell me all the
21:34 time, you know, I learned so much from that loss.
21:36 - Yes.
21:37 - You know, the second half of my career really started
21:39 after that loss.
21:40 I took more away from that than the 13, 20 wins I had
21:43 before that, all those things being said, you know,
21:46 it's put him in an opportunity tonight to show improve.
21:48 That's the case.
21:49 - And the thing that he said,
21:50 that Maloney said that he improved in was he saw how quick
21:54 that Inouye was able to close the distance.
21:56 So he went back and said, man, footwork is a major factor
22:00 in this game of boxing.
22:02 And I have to say, yeah, it is.
22:04 - You lit up, didn't you?
22:05 - Yeah, I did light up.
22:05 I'm not gonna lie.
22:06 I did light up because, you know,
22:08 we have this assumption about other things and other skills
22:11 that are superior than others and footwork,
22:15 you can't do anything without footwork.
22:18 You know, and I'm gonna prove my point right now.
22:21 Stand in the center of the ring and just stand there
22:24 and fight a guy and see how well you do.
22:26 Just stand there.
22:27 You gotta have footwork to get yourself in and out
22:30 of harm's way.
22:31 You gotta have footwork to be able to land your punches
22:34 and get out of the way afterwards.
22:36 So footwork is a huge, huge factor in skill
22:41 that I believe that every fighter should try to master first.
22:45 Ooh.
22:46 - Not to digress further, but it's one reason,
22:48 one of the many reasons I'm excited for our matchup
22:51 and our main event next weekend.
22:53 Devon Haney taking on Vincente Lombatico
22:55 when you talk about footwork.
22:55 - Yes.
22:57 - But more on that fight too,
22:58 to come later in our broadcast tonight.
23:00 But these two have abandoned a lot of that footwork
23:02 and have spent the last two rounds fighting more so
23:05 in the center of the ring than they did
23:06 in the previous four.
23:08 - Stop, step back.
23:09 - I would think that that would favor Javier Martinez,
23:12 but James has got some good shots in on the inside.
23:15 - James is seemingly now his corner, I'm sure.
23:18 - Put your hand out, put your hand out, Joshua.
23:21 - Just check out James, how he's,
23:23 even though he has that hand outside,
23:24 that right hand outside,
23:25 he's hitting Martinez on the shoulders.
23:27 See, that's good shots right there on the inside,
23:29 but just pay attention to him hitting him
23:30 on the shoulders, on the forearms.
23:32 Those shots hurt, those small little thudding punches.
23:35 They hurt.
23:37 And Martinez' arm tomorrow is gonna be sore.
23:38 It's gonna be sore for a couple of days.
23:40 - Both fighters landing to the body on the inside as well.
23:48 And then James takes it upstairs.
23:50 Martinez missing with those hooks on the inside,
23:55 but messy, a little messy there to end that round.
23:59 - Yeah, both guys beating the hell out of each other's body
24:11 like they stole something from a mug.
24:13 Look at this shot right here.
24:14 Nice jab down to the body right there from Martinez.
24:17 No joke, ooh, nice left hook.
24:19 You see the arm tuck up.
24:21 Beautiful left hand down the middle.
24:23 They trading body shots.
24:24 I'm telling you people, like it owes 'em money.
24:27 My goodness, beautiful inside shot right there
24:30 to the solar plex by James.
24:31 Just good work by both gentlemen.
24:33 I don't know who's winning this fight.
24:35 I don't know how these judges are scoring this match.
24:37 It's going back and forth.
24:39 One minute, I see Martinez, he's dominating the fight.
24:42 The next minute, I see James dominating the fight.
24:44 Christina, how the hell do you got this?
24:47 - I don't know, and that's why I don't get paid to score.
24:50 I get paid to call the fights, read the promos,
24:53 lead us in and out of break.
24:54 It's a lot to manage.
24:55 That's why the people scoring the fight,
24:58 that's all that they do.
24:59 And they still don't get it right all the time now, do they?
25:02 Oh, they do not want that job.
25:04 No, but it has gone back and forth.
25:06 I mean, I think that James has started the fight strong
25:09 and then Martinez picked it up
25:10 and then it's gone back and forth the last couple of rounds.
25:12 - Yeah, and it just seems like to me now,
25:14 James has got a second wind and now he's coming,
25:16 he's looking stronger, got his technique,
25:18 he's under his feet and he's letting his hands go.
25:21 A lot more, he's been a little bit more consistent
25:23 with his work.
25:23 And now you're seeing Martinez, now he's laying back
25:27 and he's just looking for an opportunity just to snipe.
25:29 He's looking for one punch
25:30 and that could be the problem tonight
25:32 instead of letting his hands go.
25:33 Sometimes that's what you just gotta do.
25:36 You gotta let your hands go.
25:37 - Oh, good body work there
25:39 and that combination from Martinez.
25:41 - Right there, beautiful shot as you said, Christina.
25:45 - You finished it back up top.
25:46 - Good setup on the inside.
25:48 - I think he just needs to give himself
25:50 like a little bit more distance.
25:51 I don't think that the very tight inside game
25:54 benefits Martinez as if he would have taken
25:56 maybe just a half a step back
25:57 and 'cause he smothers his shots too much on the inside.
25:59 - He smothers his shots on the inside, you're right.
26:01 Great analysis, Christina.
26:02 - I know, sorry.
26:03 - And no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
26:05 I love it, I love it because if he steps back
26:07 then he's able to see those punches coming
26:10 and he can put himself in a good position
26:11 to be able to counter shots.
26:13 'Cause that's what Martinez is, he's a counter puncher.
26:15 (crowd cheering)
26:18 - Worker get out guys, worker get out.
26:22 Stop, stop, turn around, we're good, step back, step back.
26:25 - Beautiful shot right there, see, look, ooh, nice.
26:33 He's just letting those hands go from right there,
26:35 just digging downstairs.
26:37 James has a bad habit of standing up inside the pocket.
26:40 He needs to learn how to drop his lower center of gravity,
26:43 drop down, protect himself from the body shots.
26:46 - Yeah, there's those moments where you wanna fight tall
26:48 and utilize that height and reach,
26:50 but it really depends on what sits right in front of you.
26:53 - And it depends on the range and where you are.
26:55 But on the inside, you definitely wanna drop those knees down
26:57 so that way you don't get pushed up.
26:59 Soon as those hips come forward, you're stuck, you're stuck.
27:05 Good right hand.
27:09 - Yeah, right hand.
27:10 - Good right hand, but again,
27:11 it was out at the right distance for James
27:13 and then he gets in the inside and he ties up.
27:15 Got all that wrestling going on.
27:19 That tires you out too.
27:21 - Yeah, and some fatigue too.
27:22 I mean, his last fight was in September,
27:23 so he's had about seven, eight months off
27:25 and some of that, I mean,
27:27 this has been the last couple of rounds.
27:28 They've had moments like this where they're just kinda holding
27:30 and wrestling along the inside.
27:32 - Hey, I'm gonna tell you right now,
27:37 this is a Martinez round.
27:38 He's really stepping on the gas pedal.
27:40 He's letting his hands go.
27:41 - There's a good shot right there.
27:43 - Man, a beautiful shot like that.
27:44 My goodness.
27:44 - Nice lead.
27:45 Starting down low and then finishing up top.
27:49 Janabek and Buddy McGirt might not speak the same language,
27:55 but when it comes to boxing,
27:56 these two completely understand that relationship
27:59 between athlete and trainer.
28:01 Take a listen.
28:02 - Good work, guys, good work.
28:03 - Did you know he was a great champion,
28:07 not just another pretty face?
28:09 (speaking in foreign language)
28:13 (dramatic music)
28:16 (speaking in foreign language)
28:44 - What's your favorite Buddy McGirt fight?
28:46 (speaking in foreign language)
28:50 - Aren't you happy Pernell finally gave you something?
29:00 - Yeah.
29:01 - Great job by Mark Kregel getting a good laugh
29:06 out of Buddy McGirt.
29:07 One of our favorite guys, right?
29:09 I mean, Buddy and Janabek, it's a unique relationship,
29:11 but they speak boxing and that's the most important thing.
29:13 - That's what it is.
29:14 And the technique varies, but you know,
29:16 the fundamentals and tactics never change in boxing.
29:19 That's why it works.
29:20 But speaking of Buddy, every time I see Buddy,
29:24 he comes into the fighter meetings
29:26 and he takes his hat off and he puts it on my head.
29:29 And believe it or not, people,
29:31 Buddy's hat spins around my head.
29:35 He has a bigger head than I do.
29:36 And I ain't never met anybody with a bigger head than me.
29:39 My gosh.
29:41 - No comment.
29:42 - Lord bless his mother.
29:44 - Worker, get up guys.
29:45 Javier, let him go.
29:46 - Shout out to all the mothers.
29:47 - Oh, yes.
29:48 - Tomorrow is Mother's Day.
29:50 Shout out to my mother, Tim's mother,
29:51 Tim's wife, Monica, everybody.
29:53 - Yes.
29:54 - Mother's Day weekend.
29:54 - Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers.
29:56 - Thank you.
29:57 - Round eight, the final round,
30:01 in what Tim believes could be a back and forth,
30:03 close fight on the scorecards,
30:05 if I heard that correctly in round six.
30:07 Not unless your opinion has changed drastically since then.
30:10 I know Martinez had a good round seven.
30:13 - Okay, you hear me?
30:14 - He did, he had a great round seven, I would say.
30:17 And he's having a good round this round too,
30:20 a good start to this round.
30:21 - Back to the jab, goes James something.
30:27 He's abandoned the last few rounds
30:29 and that's what helps set up combinations like that,
30:32 where he was effective early in the fight.
30:34 - Yeah, James now is having a fight off the back foot.
30:36 A lot of the pressure is coming from Martinez.
30:39 - And I understand when you're fighting a southpaw
30:42 that the jab's not necessarily as effective as a punch,
30:45 as if you're fighting another orthodox fighter,
30:47 but I mean, that really got him going early on in the fight.
30:50 - It is effective, Christina.
30:51 - Oh, it's effective, just-
30:52 - No, the jab can be effective
30:54 when you're facing a southpaw.
30:55 It just depends on how you use it.
30:57 The jab is just not a tool that you use,
30:59 it's just to stick out there at times.
31:02 - Back and forth, these two go just about a minute left
31:04 in this fight.
31:05 - Throw your hand down, Joe Trot.
31:08 Work your get up, guys.
31:09 Hands are free.
31:10 - The jab, Christina, it can occupy the eyes,
31:12 the eyes of the opponent,
31:15 and control the pace of the fight.
31:17 - We saw that in the lab.
31:19 - Yes.
31:20 - He broke that down for us.
31:21 - Yes.
31:21 - Hopefully, we'll see that again later.
31:23 - Let him go.
31:28 - 40 seconds left.
31:29 These two going back and forth, holding once again.
31:34 - See, these are the moments right here
31:35 where you try to create as much separation as you can
31:38 in these last moments.
31:39 You want to leave the last impression,
31:41 good impression for the judges.
31:43 You let it go.
31:44 You got to depend on your heart, your will.
31:46 You got to put it all on the line.
31:47 You got to show these judges
31:49 that you want to win this last round.
31:51 - Get off his head.
31:53 - Especially knowing that it could be closer
31:56 to your opponent's backyard,
31:57 but he's the favorite on paper.
32:00 - Stop, stop, stop.
32:01 Get off his head.
32:02 Here we go.
32:03 Step back.
32:03 - That is the end.
32:08 Both guys raising their hand up.
32:10 Martinez looks a little bit more winded here
32:12 than does Joe Sean James,
32:14 who is looking pretty confident
32:16 walking back to his corner.
32:17 And they're dabbing up Martinez's corner,
32:20 but he thinks he has this one in the bag.
32:22 - He did a little bit of everything.
32:25 You know, and I always say that.
32:26 When I would fight, I would do a little bit of everything.
32:30 You know, I would fight on the outside.
32:32 I would box a bit.
32:33 And that's what you saw from James tonight.
32:35 You saw him do a little bit of everything.
32:36 Actually, for both men.
32:38 You know, both men were landing some solid shots,
32:40 Christina, tonight, especially to the body.
32:42 Both of them put emphasis on the body,
32:43 trying to slow each other down.
32:45 You know, James had some great moments on the outside
32:48 and he wasn't afraid to mix it up with Martinez,
32:51 you know, at all.
32:52 He believed in his guns.
32:53 He believed in his chin and his conditioning.
32:55 And that's what it takes in fights like this.
32:57 When you have two undefeated fighters going back and forth,
33:00 you gotta be in superb conditioning.
33:02 Both these men showed that tonight.
33:05 But it was a good performance by both men.
33:08 This division, like you said, is stacked with talent.
33:11 With a performance like this from both men,
33:13 I think they still work that need to be done.
33:15 This isn't a finished product at all.
33:17 But a good fight.
33:18 I don't know who's gonna win this fight,
33:20 but somebody old has got to go.
33:23 We gonna hear these judges here pretty soon, so.
33:25 - Well, if body language is any indicator,
33:29 I'm not sure Javier Martinez is confident
33:32 that he won this fight.
33:33 He walked over there and was like, "Good fight, man."
33:35 But, you know, I think he's not sure at this point
33:38 what the scorecards are going to look like.
33:41 Both guys undefeated.
33:42 Martinez, eight and O.
33:44 Joe Sean James, seven and O.
33:46 - Look, Martinez, look at, look at, no.
33:48 And don't take this, you know, any way.
33:50 Martinez has had a rough life.
33:52 He's had a rough life, man.
33:53 A rough upbringing.
33:55 You know, so disappointment is something that he's used to.
33:59 You know what I mean?
34:00 So if he wins tonight, it's fantastic.
34:03 If he lose tonight, it is what it is, I think.
34:05 - Well, and being, you know, familiar with top rank
34:09 and how their matchmakers and things work,
34:11 I mean, Javier Martinez kind of needs to continue to put up.
34:15 - He was supposed to, he was supposed to win.
34:17 See, a loss is-
34:18 - And he might still.
34:18 We're getting to the decision.
34:19 - Yeah, I know, I know.
34:21 But I'm just saying, like, what a loss does
34:25 is that it slows you down from getting to that title shot
34:28 that you've always dreamed of.
34:30 That's what a loss does to a fighter
34:32 at this stage in his career.
34:34 - All right, well, unless it's a draw,
34:36 let's see which fighter-
34:37 - I think we might get that.
34:38 - Which fighter, yeah, let's see.
34:40 Here's Mark Chinook, he's ready.
34:41 Let's go.
34:42 - Ladies and gentlemen, after eight rounds here
34:45 inside the Stockton Arena,
34:47 we go to the judges' scorecards for the official decision.
34:50 Lisa Chiappa scores the bout 79-73 in favor of James.
34:58 Pat Russell scores the bout 77-75 in favor of Martinez.
35:03 Edward Hernandez Sr. scores the bout 76-76,
35:10 declaring this bout a split draw.
35:14 - And I did not know that.
35:16 - I'm trying to tell you.
35:17 - That's what happens when you jinx it,
35:19 saying somebody's O's gotta go,
35:20 forgetting all about the fact that there could be a draw.
35:22 And you know what?
35:23 I'm not mad at the decision.
35:24 I know the fans here are because they want their home
35:27 town fighter, Joshawn James, to get the win,
35:29 but a draw is what it is.
35:31 - Again, there wasn't enough separation
