Fishermen freak out after catching 15ft-long carpenter shark off Florida coast

These excited fishermen couldn't hide their emotions when they reeled in a huge - critically endangered - sawfish.

Dan D’alessio, 34, and AJ Rotondella caught the rare fish on the Treasure Coast area of Florida, USA.

"That is the biggest sawfish I've ever seen!," Dan is heard screaming:

Sawfish are deemed a critically endangered species and can grow up to 7.6 metres.

Dan, a private chef from Middletown, New Jersey, USA, was on a fishing trip with his friend AJ, a local fishing guide, looking to catch sharks.

But ten minutes in, they managed to reel in what they estimated to be a "700-800lbs" and "13-15ft-long" sawfish.

After assessing the sawfish, the pair managed to release it safely.

They contacted Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and reported the catch.

Dan said: "We were not attempting to catch sawfish, but we landed it just 10 minutes after we got the bite.

"Sawfish are critically endangered. Certain areas have a resident population, but by no means are they abundant.

"Typically they are not a threat to humans, but due to their size and the weapon they yield on their face, they can be dangerous if provoked. They are very strong animals.

"There’s no way to tell for sure how big it was, but probably near 700-800lbs."

After the sawfish was released they pair carried on fishing and caught a bull shark.

The sawfish was caught on April 4.
