ADAGIO TO EUROPE's Friends

Composed in 1970, by Didier Van Damme, thirteen years after the signing of the Treaty of Rome, establishing the European Economic Community (EEC) and two years before the accession treaty, signed in The Hague, opening the second phase in the construction of Europe, the ADAGIO TO EUROPE bears a powerful message of hope, peace and involvement in the coming together of peoples, as exemplified in the ever-increasing momentum of the construction of Europe. The ADAGIO TO EUROPE thus appears to stem directly from the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950. ... Europe will be united only on the essential and vital condition that it is governed in a spirit of service to its citizens, reconciliation and brotherhood, which alone will ensure solidarity and peace. Over the years, the ADAGIO TO EUROPE has become the 'musical visiting card' of the moving and passionate collective enterprise towards a bright and compassionate future.
In 2004, ten new countries joined the European Union. On this occasion, the following words were added to the opening notes of the Adagio to Europe by Didier Van Damme's grandson, David Lasserre, preparing the listener for the inspiration which animates the work from start to finish:
Europe we owe you peace and strength
As both your fathers and your proud children
From sorrows has come glorious destiny
Within you ... lies Liberty
May you remain an example
Of friendship and hope for the people of the world
