In the future, Nell and Eva live with their father in a remote forest home. A continent-wide power outage occurs, leaving them stranded. Their father dies from a chainsaw accident, and the girls are left alone for two months. Nell's boyfriend, Eli, convinces her to leave with him to find help, but she returns after a night away, unwilling to leave Eva. Eva is raped by a man named Stan and becomes pregnant. The sisters flee to a tree stump to give birth to Eva's baby during a storm. They burn down their home and walk into the forest with a few belongings.
