Canada and the United States scrambled jets to take down an unidentified flying object (UFO) over Canada on Saturday, February 12, 2023. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ordered the "take down of an unidentified object that violated Canadian airspace", which was confirmed by NORAD to be a "high altitude airborne object" over northern Canada. The object was shot down by a US F-22 fighter jet, and Canadian forces will now recover and analyze the wreckage of the object. This is not the first time that jets have been scrambled to take down an unidentified flying object in North American skies. On February 4, 2021, a US fighter jet took down a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon over the Atlantic Ocean after it spent several days traversing across the country. A week earlier, US military fighter jets shot down another suspected Chinese surveillance balloon over Alaska after US officials determined that it posed a "reasonable threat to civilian air traffic".
