Claire Simmons (Jennifer Aniston) is in pain. It is evident in the scars that line her body and the way she carries herself, wincing with each step. She's no good at hiding her emotional pain either. Blunt to the point of insult, Claire's anger seethes out of her with every interaction. She drove away her husband, friends, even her chronic pain support group has kicked her out. The only one left in Claire's otherwise solitary existence is her caretaker, Silvana (Adriana Barraza), who condones her boss' need for liquor and pills. But the suicide of Nina (Anna Kendrick), a fellow chronic-pain group member, prompts another fixation. On her pursuit, Claire explores the boundaries between life and death, abandonment and heartbreak, danger and salvation. As she inserts herself into the lives of Nina's husband (Sam Worthington) and son, Claire just might find salvation.

Claire Bennett ist schwer vom Schicksal getroffen, sie leidet an chronischen Schmerzen und lenkt ihren Frust immer wieder auf die Menschen, die sie umgeben. Freunde und Ehemann haben sich von ihr abgewandt. Als Bezugsperson bleibt nur die Haushälterin Silvana, aber auch sie hat Probleme damit, den Alkohol- und Pillenkonsum ihrer Chefin zu tolerieren. Eine Zeit lang besuchte Claire eine Selbsthilfegruppe – bis sie rausgeworfen wurde. Dort lernte sie Nina kennen, die sich umgebracht hat. Obsessiv versucht Claire, die Umstände des Freitods aufzuklären. Dabei lernt sie Ninas Ehemann kennen, Roy, kommt ihm immer näher und beginnt schließlich eine Affäre mit dem alleinstehenden Mann. Ob die Beziehung hilft, Claires emotionale Wunden zu heilen?
