Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson bewachen im Schnellzug London-Edinburgh den "Stern von Rhodesien", einen Edelstein von unschätzbarem Wert. Ein Inspektor von Scotland Yard ist ebenfalls mit der Obhut des Diamanten beauftragt. Die Drei können jedoch nicht verhindern, dass der Diamant gestohlen und der Sohn des Besitzers ermordet wird. Untersuchungen von Waggons und Passagieren ergeben, dass der Mörder im Doppelten Boden eines Sarges in den Schnellzug "geschmuggelt" wurde. Zwei weitere Verbrechen geschehen...
