The band was founded in 1970 by three South Wales musicians - guitarist Ralph Evans, bassist Ricky John Holt and drummer Rob Reynolds. They were soon joined by second guitarist David (Dai) Shell and vocalist Terry Bennett. After the original drummer was replaced by Bob "Congo" Jones (formerly of Love Sculpture), the line-up was finally formed. The band recorded several demos at Cardiff's Ddraig Studios before signing an album deal with George Martin's AIR Productions. In 1973, Polydor Records released their debut LP, which attracted good press and was warmly received by the public ... Sassafras still holds the UK record as the group that held the most concerts in a year (332 concerts in 365 days ). The band disbanded in 1977
