Iraq's answer to the pyramids: the Khafre pyramid and the Giza pyramids are part of a group of stone and mud-brick tombs that include the pyramids of Abu Rawash, Sakkara and Dahshur. The White Pyramid of Ur, located in southern Iraq, was once the second-largest pyramid in the world. The mud-brick structure was laid out in perfect geometric precision. It contains no writing, but it survives to this day. At the heart of the civilisation that developed around ancient Mesopotamia was the megalithic cult of the dead, which worshipped the stone dead of their ancestors and the gods that had once lived on earth. The temples, palaces and cities built in this period were designed to reflect the spiritual world.
