In her sophomore outing Qala, writer-director Anvitaa Dutt explores the complex mother-daughter relationship and deep-rooted gender inequalities. Dutt, who has emerged as a unique voice in contemporary Indian cinema, captures the life of a playback singer in the 1930s and the way her tragic past catches up with her causing her to unravel at the peak of her hard-won success. The beginning and end of her spiral is triggered by her relationship with her mother. The movie delves into how she navigates professional successes while battling these personal demons. The cast of Qala features Triptii Dimri, Babil Khan, Swastika Mukherjee, Varun Grover, Amit Sial, Girija Oak, Sameer Kochhar and Tasveer Kamil. The music is composed by Amit Trivedi. Qala is now streaming on Netflix.
