Pangolins, also known as scaly anteaters, are mammals of the Pholidota order (/fldot/, from Ancient Greek o - "clad in scales"). [6] The Manidae, the only extant family, consists of three genera: Manis, Phataginus, and Smutsia. Manis has four species found in Asia, while Phataginus and Smutsia each have two species found in Sub-Saharan Africa. [7] The size of these species ranges from 30 to 100 cm (12 to 39 in). There are also several extinct pangolin species.
