Nanotechnology, in the context of computer science, is a type of engineering geared toward building electronic components and devices measured in nanometers, which are extremely tiny in size and structure. Nanotechnology facilitates the building of functional matter and systems at the scalar level of an atom or molecule. It incorporates concepts from physics, biology, engineering and many other disciplines. Nanotechnology is also known as nanotech. Nanotechnology is implemented in many different fields and applications, such as computing, biotechnology, electronics and chemical engineering. Nanoparticles have been developed, which are nano-sized materials (less than 100 nm in diameter). These are being used in the medical field. Nanorobotics uses nanotechnology to develop microscopic robots that are far smaller in width than a strand of human hair. Elsewhere, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have created one of the world’s most sophisticated snake-like robots and a team at the University of California at Berkeley is working on robots the size of insects. While Asimo’s walking is undoubtedly impressive, robotic snakes and bugs can reach parts that Asimo can’t. So, a robot’s sophistication should really be measured against the tasks it’s been designed to perform.
