BMW XM
In 2022, BMW will release the XM, a 750hp hybrid SUV.

The M performance automobile division of BMW is commemorating its 50th anniversary.

Instead of retro reincarnations of icons like the M1 or E30 M3, BMW has shown the Concept XM, a super-SUV.

The Concept XM will be the first electrified automobile from BMW's M division, and it will be available solely as a M car - the first since the M1 sports car of 1978.

It is driven by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine that produces 750 horsepower and 737 lb-ft of torque when combined with the hybrid system.

The car will compete against other high-performance SUVs such as the Line Rover Sport SVR, Jaguar F-Pace SVR, Audi RS Q8, and – the Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo SE-Hybrid, as it sits at the top of the BMW range.

The XM's inside contains brown "vintage-look" leather, copper and carbon fibre accents, and BMW claims that it "creates a bridge between elegance and motor racing."

The dashboard includes the familiar gear selector and iDrive controller used in today's BMWs, as well as the same wide, curving digital display found in the company's iX electric SUV.

The back seats are described by BMW as "lounge-like,"
in contrast to the sportier front half of the saloon.

The seats are painted in a colour called Petrol, and the back seat bench has deep recesses to make it feel more like a couch than a set of seats.

The XM Concept "provides a first sight of the redesigned front-end design for BMW's next luxury-class cars," according to BMW. That grille doesn't appear to be decreasing any time soon.

The sharp-suited SUV was unveiled at Art Basel's 2021 Miami Beach show, and while still a concept, it is expected to enter series production by the end of 2022, albeit with toned-down style.

BMW claims that the production version of the XM will have an all-electric range of 80 kilometres (50 miles), but no additional performance statistics have been released at this time.

It's a powertrain that'll very certainly be used in future M cars, such as replacements for the present M5, M8, X5 M, and X6 M.

The XM may be regarded BMW's flagship vehicle, sitting above the X7 and serving as the de facto X8, however BMW claims it is a one-of-a-kind vehicle.

To that purpose, the car is equipped with a custom drivetrain and related equipment.

The XM will be produced in BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina facility beginning in 2022,
with the US being the car's primary market.

The XM will go into production in late 2022
although BMW has yet to reveal its price.
