00:00:00Hi, uh, what's your name, sir?
00:00:27Uh, yeah, behind me is the, uh, the Hudson River and, uh, panorama of the Palisades.
00:00:40Maybe you think that I'm up in, uh, Cascades somewhere, but, uh, you're wrong.
00:00:48Though I'm here and the river is behind me, it's true, I'm up the river.
00:00:54I'm up in a place where I'm just a number and a face among 1,200 other faces and other names and numbers.
00:01:09This is a place where people such as, uh, the famous Willie Sutton, the Rosenbergs, uh, Trigger Burke, Joe Bellacci, they all pass through here.
00:01:23This is the, uh, arson and correction facility known the world over as the famous Sing Sing Prison.
00:01:35Goin' on a journey up the Hudson, goin' on a lonesome train.
00:02:02They can put me in the death house or keep me in the same same jail.
00:02:15I wrote and asked the warden why they call the jail the same same.
00:02:39He said, stand here by this rock pile and listen to them hammers ring.
00:02:51Big June's in the courthouse, papers sellin' for fifty cents.
00:03:15All the judge tryin' to jail me, my lawyer pleadin' self-defense.
00:03:26You can send me up the river, I'll send me to that mean old jail.
00:03:48I killed my man, and I don't need no bail.
00:03:59This is my cell here where I keep all my supplies, where I can get them handy.
00:04:04My fish tank is over here, at night I pass away my time, look at my fish.
00:04:09And I got my, uh, refrigerator here out in the window where I keep all my supplies, keep it fresh and cold.
00:04:16There's a little cabin here where I keep my underwear and other shirt and stuff.
00:04:21Then here I keep my, your, uh, my tuna fish and sardines and stuff, whatever I need when I cook down the hill.
00:04:31And this is my bed here at night, this is where I sleep.
00:04:35Good morning, B.B.

00:05:02I'm gonna start turnin' now, once I start turnin' I'm all ready.
00:05:06I'm ready.
00:05:08I'm surprised they haven't taken down my clothes line, cause they usually say people hang out with them here.
00:05:15My desk, my chair, you know, the only thing they let you have, you know, when you come in here, man, is like what you see.
00:05:23Tallest bowl, six inches from my head, and, uh, and the wash basin, man, that's it.

00:05:35It was this big image, you know, natural.
00:05:39I wore makeup the whole time.
00:05:41I just smeared it around a little bit so they couldn't tell.

00:05:49I don't wanna excite anybody.
00:05:52At the warden.

00:06:03They intensify their meanings, man, like the books is all really I have.
00:06:08Then the pictures from home means a great deal.
00:06:12Several of them I had to put them down cause I just couldn't take lookin' at them no more.

00:07:09And they're gonna get equal billing.
00:07:11I've been involved for almost a year now.
00:07:14And, uh, since I was given the assignment as stage manager,
00:07:18I feel that this is my, part of my responsibility.

00:28:42Of every man who put me here
00:28:49I see my light come shining
00:28:57From the west down to the east
00:29:05Any day now, any day now
00:29:13I shall be released
00:29:19Well, yonder stands a man in this lonely crowd
00:29:28A man who swears he's not to blame
00:29:36All day long I hear him shouting so loud
00:29:43Keeps crying out that he was praying
00:29:51I see my light come shining
00:29:59From the west down to the east

00:33:38Relaxed
00:33:40A little scared
00:33:41I built a house there for him
00:33:43And at lunch time, when I have time I give him
00:33:47Go in the luncheon, in the mess hall
00:33:50Pick up some leftovers from the inmates
00:33:53And the plates, bring it down to him
00:33:56How do you feel about that cat?
00:33:58I like him

00:34:04Like I said, Pinto, Pinto, two, three times
00:34:06Comes running, he starts meowing
00:34:08That means he wants food
00:34:10So I gave him the food and
00:34:13Everything's straight
00:34:14But I'm going to take him home when I get out

00:36:13I didn't do it!
00:36:17And now in the same, same prison, do as we tell you to or else.
00:36:20I didn't do it!
00:36:24Good morning. I am the prison psychiatrist. I'm here to determine your sanity.
00:36:28Did you commit the crime?
00:36:29I didn't do it!
00:36:30Did you commit the crime?
00:36:31I didn't do it! I didn't do it!
00:36:32Goodbye.
00:36:34Goodbye. Goodbye.
00:36:38I was a parole board here to determine your medical status.
00:36:40Did you commit the crime?
00:36:41I didn't do it!
00:36:42Did you do it?
00:36:43I didn't do it! I didn't do it!
00:36:45I didn't do it!
00:36:46I didn't do it!
00:36:48I didn't do it!
00:36:50Boy, ask your employer to check your background.
00:36:53You didn't tell us you had a record. You're fine.
00:36:55I didn't do it!
00:36:57Oh, my God!
00:36:59I didn't do it!
00:37:01I didn't do it!
00:37:03I didn't do it!
00:37:04Get out of my house!
00:37:05Get out!
00:37:11You're going back for parole by 8 o'clock.
00:37:13By 8 o'clock.
00:37:43Hey!
00:37:47Hey!
00:37:48Did you hear me calling the line?
00:37:50What's your number?
00:37:51T-block.
00:37:52Solitary confinement.
00:37:54The hole!
00:38:01Leave me alone!
00:38:02All right!
00:38:03All right! I did it!
00:38:04I did it!
00:38:05I did it!
00:38:06I did it!
00:38:07Let me go!
00:38:08I did it!
00:38:09I did it!
00:38:10God damn it!
00:38:12I did it!
00:38:24Next case.
00:38:26The federal government, they want to get rid of all this, what they call crime in the street.
00:38:30They should take that ex-con.
00:38:35Right?
00:38:36And have jobs prepared for the man out there.
00:38:40A job that not only could pay $40 or $50 a week, because that ain't going to make it.
00:38:46$40 or $50 a week, man.
00:38:47I can get a gun and buy me a gun for $40 and I make me $200 or $300 a day.
00:38:53Like, they have the alleviation of going to them streets, man, and going to their wives and their kids,
00:38:58and having a little bit of love.
00:39:00That's what they have.
00:39:01That's what they want to consider it, you know?
00:39:03Having a little bit of love out there, man.
00:39:05We don't have none of this, man.
00:39:07We got to wait for visits.
00:39:08We have to wait for mail.
00:39:10We have to go through all the changes.
00:39:12We have to go to the service unit.
00:39:14Everything, man, is dependent upon them.
00:39:16We don't have no self-reliant thing, except our minds.
00:39:19And few of us know how to use it, because it's conditioned already, man, to react to four walls.
00:39:25I rapped to a guy.
00:39:26I was in Auburn.
00:39:27And I talked to a guy that did, like, 38 years.
00:39:31You know?
00:39:32And he's 38 years behind the wall.
00:39:35I got stabbed in the joint, you know?
00:39:38And that was a hell of an experience for me, man.
00:39:40And, like, this guy was, like, telling me, like, that ain't nothing, kid.
00:39:43It was an old guy, and he's telling me, like, 38 years in here, man, and don't worry.
00:39:49You know, you'll get over it, you know?
00:39:51And finally, I remember when he was going home, and this guy was, like, 70-something years old.
00:39:56He was acting like a young boy, man, you know?
00:39:58Hey, kid, they're letting me go, you know?
00:40:00They're letting me go, kid, you know?
00:40:02I said, right, Doc.
00:40:03We used to call him Doc.
00:40:04He just was the cook, man, in the hospital.
00:40:07So this next little song is just, like, three stories.
00:40:11And I don't know whether you guys have the patience to listen all the way through, but it will be nice, okay?
00:40:17And they're all true.
00:40:23Billy Rose was a lowrider.
00:40:26Billy Rose was a night fighter.
00:40:29Billy Rose knew trouble like the sound of his own name.
00:40:34Busted on a drunken charge, driving someone else's car,
00:40:39the local midnight sheriff's claim to fame.
00:40:44In an Arizona jail, there is some who tell the tale
00:40:49how Billy fought the sergeant for some milk that he demanded.
00:40:55Knowing he would pay the cost, knowing they'd remain the boss,
00:41:00they saw he was severely reprimanded.
00:41:07In the blackest cell on a block,
00:41:12he hanged himself at dawn
00:41:17with a note stuck to the bunkhead.
00:41:22Don't f*** with me, just take me home.
00:41:27Come and lay, help us lay young Billy down.
00:41:37Luna was a Mexican, the law calls an alien,
00:41:42for coming past the border with a baby and a wife.
00:41:48His clothes upon his back were wet,
00:41:51still he thought that he could get some money and things to start a life.
00:41:58But it hadn't been too very long when it seemed like everything went wrong,
00:42:03didn't even have the time to find themselves a home.
00:42:09When this foreigner, a brown-skinned male, thrown inside a Texas jail,
00:42:14left his wife and baby quite alone.
00:42:21He's the pain inside him, with a needle in his arm,
00:42:30but the dope just crucified him,
00:42:35and he died to no one's great alarm.
00:42:40Come and lay, help us lay poor Luna down.
00:42:49And then we'll raise, raise the prisons to the ground.
00:42:59Lila White was an aging con of 65 who stood a chance
00:43:04to stay alive and leave the joint and walk the streets again.
00:43:10At the time he was to go to near he suffered all the joy and fear
00:43:15of leaving 35 years in the pen.
00:43:20Then on the day of his release he was approached by the police
00:43:25who took him to the warden walking slowly by his side.
00:43:31The warden said, you won't remain here, but it seems the state retainer claims
00:43:37another ten years of your life.
00:43:43He stepped out in the Texas sunlight and the cops all stood around.
00:43:53The old king of water ran 50 yards, then threw himself down on the ground.
00:44:02They might as well just have laid that old man down.
00:44:12And we're gonna raise, raise the prisons to the ground.
00:44:22Help us raise, raise the prisons to the ground.
00:44:32Help us raise, raise the prisons to the ground.
00:44:42Help us raise, raise the prisons to the ground.
00:44:53I'm a reporter for the New York Daily News.
00:44:56What do you think about the concert today?
00:44:58Well, I think it's a remarkable event.
00:45:00I've never seen anything quite like it where the audience and the performers
00:45:05and the people on stage are all kind of part of a big happening.
00:45:09It's really a happening we're handing out.
00:45:11Here he is, Tommy Fairchild.
00:45:14Is it Fairchild, brother?
00:45:19Yeah, this is a little poem I hooked up.
00:45:22It's called A Game in the Apple.
00:45:25A Game in the Apple.
00:45:27Dig it.
00:45:29In the player's game, you need no fame.
00:45:34Around town, uptown, or downtown.
00:45:38Morning, noon, and evening, too.
00:45:41You've been in that scuffle, too.
00:45:43Smoking bush, dealing stuff, bumping pills, curing ills,
00:45:48rubbing thighs, checking fives, and getting high.
00:45:52Mr. Big Stuff, pushing tough, that angel dust.
00:45:56Dumping the scene with plenty green.
00:45:59Your brother, man, extending his hand to give you the muscle to put in your hustle.
00:46:04Got beat, blew that cash, got the crash, got no stash, can't lay it low today.
00:46:11You name it, they game it, making plays to top those trades.
00:46:16Morphine, opium, codeine, methadrine, protein, cocaine,
00:46:22DMT, STP, LSD, E, A, T, H.
00:46:29Black, yellow, and brown, not black, red, and green.
00:46:33Popping out of L's, working here so well.
00:46:36Popping out of L's, giving suckers hell.
00:46:39Popping out of L's, sending chicks to hell.
00:46:42Yeah, I saw you niggas.
00:46:44Old niggas, young niggas, little niggas, big niggas, slow niggas, fast niggas,
00:46:49afro niggas, and borinqua niggas.
00:46:52Yeah, black, yellow, and brown niggas, war niggas, niggas.
00:46:57What a time you had, nodding off that gag.
00:47:01How you dig that bag, nodding off that coat.
00:47:05If that's the life you dig, don't call that man a pig.
00:47:09Can you dig it?
00:47:11All right.
00:47:14I'm reading Ralph Ellison, The Invisible Man.
00:47:19I saw it around, man, but I never picked it up.
00:47:24I've been through the Marxist theory, man, the communist theory and so on.
00:47:31I have over here help with all psychoanalysis.
00:47:39To me, this is what's happening, man.
00:47:41This is how I want to fight this battle because now I have really dug into myself.
00:47:46I'm not saying I have found myself, but I know where I'm going.
00:47:52I know what I want to do.
00:47:53Ain't nobody that can stop me.
00:47:56To stop me is going to have to take what I stand for, and that right there is my life.
00:48:011, 3, 5, 6, 2, 3.
00:48:041, 4, 4, 5, 3, 3.
00:48:06The death wants you.
00:48:08Watch out.
00:48:091, 4, 7, 9, 6, 6, man.
00:48:12Bust a furlough check.
00:48:13Get out there.
00:48:14That's 1, 4, 7, 9, 6, 6.
00:48:16Jimmy.
00:48:19All right.
00:48:219, 7, 7, 6, 4, 5, 7, 15, 95.
00:48:29Yeah.
00:48:32You know what I'm waiting for?
00:48:34I'm waiting for the first black president.
00:48:36I could have manned the cat now.
00:48:39Walks out on the inaugural day, says, thank you very much for electing me president of the United States.
00:48:46And I really thank you for electing me the first black president of the United States.
00:48:50Right now, I'd like to give you the State of the Union address.
00:48:54But first, the number for today.
00:49:01754.
00:49:03Anybody 754?
00:49:07Y'all ready?
00:49:08They're ready.
00:49:09All right, then.
00:49:10I'm used to warming people up.
00:49:12See, that's my job.
00:49:13I just warm the crowd up.
00:49:16And after that peak of ecstasy, I bring the big one on.
00:49:21That's my job.
00:49:22See, I'm not the professional type of comic.
00:49:24I'm what they call in the business a jazz comic.
00:49:28You see that last five minutes?
00:49:30That was a rip.
00:49:39But anyway, I want to bring on the big one.
00:49:42And I guess y'all know who it is.
00:49:44Y'all all set up?
00:49:45They're getting their thing together?
00:49:46Because you're going to be setting up.
00:49:47I want y'all to make them feel at home.
00:49:49Because the man's been traveling, and he's kind of tired.
00:49:51But I want y'all to make them really feel at home.
00:49:53Let's hear it for him.
00:49:54Come on, now.
00:49:55Mr. B.B. King.
00:49:56Come on.
00:50:09Reese.
00:50:10Reese?
00:50:12At the apartment.
00:50:14He's balling right now.
00:50:17While they're getting it together,
00:50:19I was told that some of you dudes don't know anything about blues.
00:50:26That's what they told me.
00:50:28So I want to say this to you.
00:50:30I came to swap some with you.
00:50:32I imagine quite a few of you dudes have the blues already.
00:50:36But today...
00:50:40That's my signal to shut up.
00:50:43Today being Thanksgiving...
00:50:46This is Thanksgiving, right?
00:50:50Thanksgiving?

00:51:07And I noticed...
00:51:08I noticed one of the members of my group you seem to know very well.
00:51:15How'd it make me feel?
00:51:16Make me feel good because he works with me.

00:54:44I gave you seven children, and now you want to give them back.
00:54:51I gave you seven children, and now you want to give them back.
00:55:13I gave you seven children, and now you want to give them back.
00:55:41All right, all right.
00:55:44Fellas, we would like to do a tune for you since today is Thanksgiving.
00:55:50And as Joan said a while ago, a lot of people do care.
00:55:56And this is our little contribution to you.
00:56:00The title of it you'll hear in the song.
00:56:04Someone really loves you.
00:56:11Guess who?
00:56:19Someone really cares.
00:56:28Guess who?
00:56:32Someone.
00:56:36Your heart.
00:56:39Oh, that surely you'll see.
00:56:46Oh, not the someone who really cares.
00:56:55It's me.
00:57:25It's me.
00:57:31It's me.
00:57:37It's me.
00:57:43It's me.
00:57:57Someone will wait eternally.
00:58:11Someone wants your love so desperately.
00:58:24Someone.
00:58:27Your heart.
00:58:30Oh, that surely you'll see.
00:58:38Oh, not the someone who really cares.
00:58:49Who really cares is me.
00:59:01Who really cares is me.
00:59:31All of your affection is gone.
00:59:47And your love is growing cold.
00:59:57I say all of your affection is gone, baby.
01:00:07And your love is growing cold.
01:00:14Hey, but I've got a new story to tell you this evening, baby.
01:00:22One that ain't never been told.
01:00:29I went to work the other day.
01:00:33But I thought that I'd double back.
01:00:37And that car I saw sitting in the front of my door,
01:00:41Looked like a brand new Camelot.
01:00:47Hey!
01:00:52I think you're cheating on me, baby.
01:00:56I think you're in love with me, baby.
01:00:59I bleed into my soul, baby.
01:01:06Have you given me some outside help?
01:01:09That I don't think I really need.
01:01:14The ice man came by this morning.
01:01:18And you know he didn't leave no ice.
01:01:22The postman came by later, baby.
01:01:25And he didn't even ring twice.
01:01:37I think you're cheating on me, baby.
01:01:41I think you're running out on me.
01:01:44I bleed into my soul, baby.
01:01:50Have you given me some outside help?
01:01:54That I don't think I really need.
01:01:59Now I want you to tell the ice man.
01:02:02The next time he better leave some ice.
01:02:06And I want you to tell the postman.
01:02:10He better ring more than twice.
01:02:14And when I come home from work in the morning.
01:02:17There better still be some groceries on the shelf.
01:02:21And I want you to tell that slick insurance man.
01:02:25That he better write some insurance on his desk.
01:02:41I bleed into my soul.
01:02:47Have you given me some outside help?
01:02:51That I don't think I really need.
01:03:13Listen.
01:03:15I was just told.
01:03:17Just told by my man there.
01:03:20That it's going to take a little break.
01:03:22I think he can tell you a little better than I can.
01:03:24I don't know.
01:03:27Come on over here with me.
01:03:29I know I don't look like Joan Baez.
01:03:31And I ain't going to kiss you.
01:03:32But go ahead and tell the people what you got to tell them.
01:03:34Hey, listen, man.
01:03:37Remember the guy said bye-ya with Mikey.
01:03:39And B.B. King is saying soul with himself.
01:03:41Jack, here it is.
01:03:43You're having a boss time, man.
01:03:45I wish we had more time.
01:03:46You don't want to leave.
01:03:48We're going to have a 15-minute break.
01:03:50And they're going to feed you Captain Sandwiches.
01:03:52They've been promising you.
01:03:53Then we're going to do it again.
01:03:55We ain't going nowhere.
01:03:56We're going to stay.

01:04:48What's happening?
01:04:50Yo, fellas, listen up.
01:04:52May I have it quiet a minute?
01:04:54Let's everybody sit down for a minute, so we can get on with the show.
01:05:01All right, fellas, let's be quiet a minute.
01:05:05We have a problem of time.
01:05:08Please cooperate because we have a deadline.
01:05:12because we have a deadline.
01:05:14The more we can get in,
01:05:16the less we have to cut out.
01:05:19Now, is this understood?
01:05:24How long you been driving the bus?
01:05:26Three years.
01:05:27Is that a choice job in here?
01:05:29Yep, I picked it.
01:05:31I've been riding this bus for a long time,
01:05:33and, uh,
01:05:35you seem to know a lot about
01:05:37the prison here.
01:05:39How do you feel about this place?
01:05:41I like it.
01:05:43Fine.
01:05:44Got no problem.
01:05:46You think it's a strange job
01:05:48being inside a prison?
01:05:50No.
01:05:52Prison's in the mind.
01:05:58What happens if you don't act tough to the inmates?
01:06:00I mean, what happens if you try and be a nice guy?
01:06:02I don't act tough.
01:06:04I just be me.
01:06:06But, I mean, if a guy's too nice
01:06:08to these people, what happens?
01:06:10Take him for a ride.
01:06:12A bad ride.
01:06:14Make a fool out of him.
01:06:16You think this place is, uh,
01:06:18giving some of these guys a chance to
01:06:20get themselves back together?
01:06:23It is, if they think right.
01:06:26They'd sit down and look at themselves first.
01:06:31They looked at themselves, and
01:06:33that's what this, uh,
01:06:35that's what time does.
01:06:37It gives you a chance to look yourself over
01:06:39and see what you are.
01:06:42Everybody shows a sad side.
01:06:44There's a hell of a lot of humor in it, too.
01:06:47Oh, tell us something of funny things you've seen.
01:06:49Huh?
01:06:50Tell us, tell me something funny that you've seen.
01:06:52Well, I've seen a guy in here the day
01:06:54everybody put down as a kook.
01:06:56Used to work for me in the brush shop.
01:06:59Used to work for me in the shop.
01:07:02He'd laugh in the morning, laugh at night.
01:07:04He did his time the best he could.
01:07:06A lot of guys despised him
01:07:08could find humor in a place.
01:07:10I got a little story.
01:07:12The other day I had
01:07:14about four or five apples in my hands, and
01:07:16Officer Swinney
01:07:18was coming down, and he says,
01:07:19Tony, what you doing with all them apples?
01:07:21So I said, well, here, I threw him an apple.
01:07:24Like this.
01:07:25Right?
01:07:27And, uh,
01:07:29two days later he saw me,
01:07:31and he says to me, uh,
01:07:34well, how many, how many, what happened to the apple?
01:07:37Four worms.
01:07:38He had four worms.
01:07:40So ever since then, he calls me apples.
01:07:44Isn't that right, Officer Swinney?
01:07:45Apple head.
01:07:46Apple head.
01:07:47Right?
01:07:49Who made that?
01:07:51An inmate made that.
01:07:52He laid it on the floor and he traced himself.
01:07:54He painted his likeness on it for me.
01:07:57And then he copied the stripes out of a book.
01:08:00Do you have that personal a relationship with the inmates?
01:08:04Oh, yes, I have.
01:08:06Yes, I've known some cases all my life.
01:08:09I know some inmates better than I know my own family.
01:08:14They pass the time of day.
01:08:16I know not long ago I met an inmate that,
01:08:20he was in almost every institution I was in,
01:08:23and we used to sit and talk about the good old days.
01:08:26It's not like this or not like that.
01:08:30It's, they realize prison as it is.
01:08:34Sing Sing is a very corrupt, foul, stinking,
01:08:43so-called correctional facility.
01:08:47It is one of the lowest,
01:08:50dirty concentration camps New York State has devised
01:08:56to incarcerate young men of good will and integrity.
01:09:00Yeah, get that right.
01:09:03I like to scream more.
01:09:06All right, thank you.
01:09:09All right, Jimmy Walker.
01:09:15Now we're going to have our finale,
01:09:17the dynamite part of our show.
01:09:19Y'all have been waiting for it.
01:09:21Come on, let's hear it for him.
01:09:22You know who it is.
01:09:23Let's welcome back the fabulous voices of East Hollywood.

01:15:35Come on, man
01:15:38Come on
01:15:44Hey listen, that's about it fellas
01:15:47I'll get that for you
01:15:54It's over, did you dig it?
01:15:57Hey, something's gotta end, you know
01:16:00So, ride, later, see you at child
01:16:03And all that type of thing, you know
01:16:06On the lock-in, back-in, you know
01:16:09Tomorrow, same old thing
01:16:12From sun to sun
01:16:15Hey listen, hey
01:16:18You cats man are tremendous, Jack
01:16:21Hey listen, Sonny
01:16:24From the Voices of East Harlem, you back there?
01:16:27That's Cindy, huh?
01:16:30And you wanted an autograph from Cindy
01:16:33You're in love with Cindy, you're the one
01:16:36We know, we know, solid, we'll tell Cindy
01:16:39My man got 28 days, he want me to let Cindy know what's happening
01:16:42Hey Cindy, you got 28 days left and it's all over
01:16:45You know, society will say he's no longer guilty
01:16:49Power to the people, man
01:16:52Right, yeah
01:16:55People outside have a negative attitude
01:16:58They say, well, they're animals
01:17:01And they should be in a cage
01:17:04We are in a cage, man
01:17:07I know what it is, man, to be in a place like this
01:17:10With nothing, wife, kids, family
01:17:13No one to contact, man
01:17:16All we ask, man, is to be treated like human beings
01:17:19Don't treat us like an animal because we are not animals
01:17:22The fact that we're in a cage
01:17:25Don't make us an animal, we have feelings
01:17:28We have emotions
01:17:31And we can relate to you if you relate to us
01:17:34As a matter of fact, we want to relate to you
01:17:37Do you want to relate to us?
01:17:40Give me a hand, show me that
01:17:43Because I have a record, you're not going to fire me
01:17:46That because I have a record, you're not going to deny me
01:17:49The right to work in a bar
01:17:52Or own an automobile, or own a house
01:17:55Or go into business, go into contracts
01:17:58Help me, that's what I'm asking for
01:18:01Give me a hand and lead me
01:18:04The right way so I don't have to come back again
01:18:07Because as long as you keep your back to me
01:18:11I'm going to keep on coming to prison
01:18:14Not only me, but other inmates
01:18:17Any more questions?
01:18:20That was it
01:18:40drums
01:18:59Sing, sing, arsoning
01:19:02What a thing to be
01:19:05A thousand men
01:19:08A thousand men
01:19:11Locking that pen on a winter's day
01:19:14With a sky so gray
01:19:17That the heavens froze, the front gate closed
01:19:20On the river outside
01:19:23Of the wall so high
01:19:26And the stone so cold
01:19:29But the men so bold
01:19:32That when the tears rose to my eyes
01:19:35I'd run and cry
01:19:48For I know full well
01:19:51That in those cells
01:19:54Where dreary hells go by
01:19:57There's serving time for you and I
01:20:00So when we walk by
01:20:03Those anxious eyes that will not cry
01:20:06Might ask us why
01:20:09We love them not
01:20:12At all
01:20:23Sing, sing, BB King
01:20:26The voices of East Harlem
01:20:29A thousand men
01:20:32Rose from their chairs
01:20:35Fist in the air
01:20:38While the music blared
01:20:41And the visitors shared
01:20:44The joy that bared
01:20:47As emotions flared
01:20:50And freedom's heirs
01:20:53Turned to declare
01:20:56You can't keep men in cages
01:21:02You can't keep men in cages
