In this video, one member of our coverboat photoshoot crew shares their opinion why a VHF radio is an essential bit of boating equipment, and how valuable they thought it was during their running of the Invincible Boats 33 Cat.

In the second half of the video, BOATING Electronics Editor Jim Hendricks shows how to adjust the squelch when using a VHF radio. Adjusting the squelch is an issue that many boaters email us about. If not done properly it can lead to missing radio transmissions, annoying static or both. Hendricks uses the same Icom M94D handheld VHF used in this video as a visual aid for this video, but the procedure is identical for a built-in VHF radio.
