Tesla Recalls 12,000 Vehicles

Tesla Inc ($TSLA@US) has recalled around 12,000 vehicles sold in the U.S. since 2017 due to a communication error that could cause a false forward-collision warning or unexpected emergency braking. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday that the recall includes just under 12,000 Model S, X, 3, and Y Teslas that came about after a routine software update on October 23rd. The update included a beta version of the 10.3 Full-Self Driving protocol. Tesla says that this is not a full-self-driving protocol, but it offers the driver advanced assistance on the road, handling some tasks while the driver is ultimately responsible for the vehicle. NHTSA said that Tesla, “uninstalled FSD 10.3 after receiving reports of inadvertent activation of the automatic emergency braking system,” and then they, “updated the software and released FSD version 10.3.1 to the affected vehicles.” The agency responsible for highway traffic and safety also said it “will continue its conversations with Tesla to ensure that any safety defect is promptly acknowledged and addressed.” Previously, NHTSA had to reach out to Tesla asking why a recall had not been issued. Even as Tesla grapples with the recall, its stock rose nearly 8 and a half percent in early trading.
