When Harvard professor Steven Levitsky co-wrote “How Democracies Die” in 2018, he says he could have never predicted the events of January 6. “I knew that Donald Trump would not accept the results of the election,” he said on “Salon Talks.” “What I did not anticipate is that the vast bulk of the Republican party would go along with it.”

During a conversation with Salon’s Dean Obeidallah, Levitsky discusses how the modern GOP compares to far-right parties in Europe and what a path to a healthy democracy in the United States looks like. He retains hope that the country is on “the brink of establishing an unprecedented multiracial democracy” that could be a model for the world.
