Indian Railways First Passenger Train Service Marks 167 Years: Must-Know Facts About The Historic Journey

The first passenger train service to run in British-ruled-India began its journey on April 16, 1853 from Mumbai’s Bori Bunder To Thane. This historic journey of 34 kilometres took the 14-coach passenger train approximately 75 minutes to cover the distance. The 14-carriage passenger train was hauled by three steam locomotives named, Sahib, Sindh, Sultan and carried 400 passengers. Even though trains in India started running much before 1853, this was the first time that a passenger train plied on the tracks of Indian Railways.
