A few weeks away from retirement, police sergeant Edward X. Delaney divides his time between the hospital, where his wife is being treated for an illness from which she can't seem to recover, and the problems at the police station related to the arrival of a new chief and the investigation into two unsolved murders, which were nevertheless shelved by his boss.
