In the 1930s in Illinois, Michael Sullivan, who seems like a quiet family man, is actually a very feared killer nicknamed "the Angel", lieutenant of the Irish gangster John Rooney along with his son, Connor. One night, his son, Michael Jr., sees his father and Connor kill some rival gangsters. For this reason Connor wants to eliminate him but Michael Sr. manages to convince him that his son will not talk. Later Michael manages to escape an ambush but Connor kills his wife and his youngest son Peter, who is mistaken for Michael Jr. From that moment on, father and son begin a journey of revenge that will also be an opportunity to build a real relationship between them and, while the father tries to save what remains of the family, the son is forced to grow up quickly.
