Lorde has finally revealed why she
took such a dramatic step away from
social media over two years ago.
She candidly discussed her 2018 decision to
delete hundreds of old tweets and Instagram
posts in the November issue of ‘Interview.’
According to Lorde, her decision to
“peace out” from social media was partly due to
her feeling like she was “losing [her] free will.”
She also revealed that she was feeling
“massive amounts of stress” over systemic
racism, police brutality and climate change.
She described being on social media as
“having front-row seats to the hellfire.”
"Part of what made me peace out on
social media … was the massive amounts
of stress I was feeling about our planet,
about systemic racism, and about police
brutality in this country … How do you deal
with having front-row seats to the hellfire?"
Lorde, to 'Interview'.
Although she removed herself
from social media, Lorde spoke
out about the murder of George Floyd
earlier this year via email.
In the mass email to fans, Lorde confessed
that she was still trying to “strike a balance”
between social media and “true action.” .
"One of the things I find most frustrating
about social media is performative activism,
predominantly by white celebrities (like me).
It’s hard to strike a balance between
self-serving social media displays
and true action."
Lorde, to 'Interview'.
