How to name footage to prevent linking issues in premiere pro or fcp or edit program - Ask George

While I was editing a documentary in Adobe Premiere Pro, I ve moved the footage to a new hard-drive and then when I tried to reconnect to the footage on the new hard drive, many of the clips were connected to incorrect files with same filename. This destroyed my edit completely. How can I prevent this?
