Operation Hathras: Police not sensitised to new rape laws?

As anger intensified over the alleged gangrape and late-night cremation of a 19-year-old Dalit victim in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras, two cops linked with the investigation revealed how standard operating procedures were overlooked when the case unfolded. Earlier this month, the Uttar Pradesh government suspended Hathras district police chief Vikrant Vir, DSP (circle officer) Ram Shabd, inspector Verma, senior sub-inspector Jagveer Singh, and head constable Mahesh Pal. An India Today investigation has secured confessions about the glaring lapses in police response.
