The greater Seoul area is seeing a surge in local transmissions of COVID-19.
On Sunday, the capital region accounted for most of the almost 280 new cases reported.
The government has therefore decided to strengthen social distancing.
Oh Jung-hee has the details.
The number of new coronavirus cases in South Korea hit a five-month high on Sunday.
It was the third day in a row the number of cases has been in the triple digits.
There were 2-hundred-79 new cases of the coronavirus reported, with 2-hundred-67 of them being local transmissions.
This follows 103 infections on Friday and 166 on Saturday.
The spike in domestic infections are mostly tied to churches in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do Province.
Infections linked to the Sarang Jeil Church in northern Seoul rose to 249,... and those linked to the Woori Jeil Church in Yongin increased to 126.
The Seoul metropolitan government has ordered their congregations and anyone else who's been to Sarang Jeil Church roughly 4,000 people to go and get tested.
But at the same time, it's planning to file a complaint against the church for taking part in a large-scale anti-government protest in central Seoul on Saturday and for hampering virus prevention efforts.
Effective Sunday, the government has raised the level of social distancing from level 1 to level 2 in the greater Seoul area.
That means a ban on gatherings of more than fifty people indoors and more than a hundred people outdoors,... and there'll be no spectators at professional sporting events.
Stricter quarantine measures will be enforced at facilities regarded as high-risk, which include clubs, singing rooms, buffets and computer cafes.
Masks will also be required at wedding venues, theaters and religious facilities.
Museums, art galleries and libraries will be restricting entries to about a half,... while daycare centers are advised to close.
Public sector companies will put half of their workers on remote or flexible working,... and private companies are recommended to follow suit.
