The story of Deutsche Grammophon, identified to many of us by its signature Yellow Label, goes back as far as the birth of recording itself and for over 120 years has been home to the world's greatest performers.
Earlier this year, DG signed an exclusive agreement with South Korean soprano Hera Hyesang Park - she's now back in her home country to promote her debut album with the world renowned label.
Our culture correspondent Kim Bo-kyoung met up with the artist in downtown Seoul.
An attractive voice that connects tradition with the current Zeitgeist in an extraordinary but authentic fashion.
That's how the President of Deutsche Grammophon one of the world’s most prestigious classical music record labels described Korean Soprano Park Hye-sang.
This May, Park Hye-sang announced she had signed an exclusive agreement with the German label,... the second Korean to do so after the pianist Cho Seong-jin.
"I was so grateful for the opportunity and feel this certain responsibility. While I was preparing my album, it gave me a chance to think about my identity, serving as a turning point in my life."
To celebrate joining the label,... she performed at the virtual recital “Moment Musical" in Berlin.
There, she showcased several Korean traditional songs such as “Like the Wind that Met With Lotus" and “Psalm 23”.
"I wanted to let the world know of Korea's beauty and our language. There are so many great composers and songs in Korea but most of them aren't well-recognized. Through this great gift I got, I wanted to contribute by introducing Korea's sentiment and language, giving the world a fresh shock."
Her debut album with the label will be released first in South Korea in November.
Park says the main themes of the album are 'border' and 'harmony'.
"I feel like I am the person in the middle of everything; I am at the border of the old and young generation, at the border of the West and East and at the border of classical and modern. Making the album was a process of finding the harmony between all those borders where I am at."
After finishing her opera project in Germany, Park Hye-sang will go on a recital tour of Korea to mark the release of the album this fall.
