Five-time winner of the Tour de France, Bernard Hinault took the start of the 1986 edition with La Vie Claire where he shared the stage with Greg LeMond. In exchange for services rendered the previous summer, the Frenchman pledged to help his young teammate become the first American winner of the Tour. A grandiose symbol of this agreement, the Alpe-d'Huez stage sees the two men riding together at the head of the stage, hand in hand, with LeMond in yellow. A unique stage at this level of competition.
