The first cricket World Cup started on this day, June 7 in 1975. Apart from start of cricket World Cup, June 7, 1975 is also known as the day when Gavaskar played his infamous super slow innings. ODIs in those days were a 60-over format and the opener carried his bat, scoring at strike rate of 20.68. Gavaskar’s reluctance to change gears as he carried his bat through the 60 overs to score 36 not out from 174 balls at a strike rate of 20.68 while chasing a target of 335. Opener Dennis Amiss scored a stroke-filled 137 in just 147 balls with 18 hits to the boundary and was well supported by Keith Fletcher (68).

7 जून 1975, वैसे तो क्रिकेट इतिहास में ये तारीख स्वर्णिम अक्षरों में हमेशा के लिए दर्ज हो गया है. इसी दिन पहली बार विश्वकप का मैच खेला गया था. उस समय वनडे मैच 60 ओवरों का खेला जाता था. तो पहला मुकाबला यानी विश्वकप का पहला मैच भारत और इंग्लैंड के बीच हुआ था. हालांकि, जिस तरीके से ये दिन स्वर्णिम था. पर मैच के नतीजे के बाद फैंस का मन खट्टा जरूर हो गया. क्योंकि किसी ने सोचा भी नहीं होगा कि विश्वकप का पहला मैच इतना घटिया बोरिंग भी हो सकता है. एक तरफ़ा से भी खराब जिसे बोल सकते हैं, वो इस मैच में भारतीय टीम की ओर से देखा गया था. ये वही मैच था जिसमें सुनील गावस्कर जैसे महान बल्लेबाज ने 174 गेंदों का सामना करते हुए 36 रनों की पारी खेली थी. और इसके बाद जो बवाल हुआ था सो अलग.
