Alex Aaronson Photography’s Tips on Filming Music Videos

Last year, I filmed my very first music video since starting my Alex Aaronson Photography business. The process was longer than anticipated and quite challenging, but the finished product surpassed all of our expectations. This is why I thought I would describe the process and share some tips that helped me out. First and foremost, choosing the right location is key. You want to discuss this with the artist, of course- make sure that you choose a place that is in line with their creative vision but that will also allow for high-quality footage to be taken. We switched between several locations in this video, some of which proved to be more difficult for filming then others.

Filming outdoors is something I have a lot of experience with- you can see that I’ve shared a lot of nature and landscape projects on the Alex Aaronson Photography blog. However, video content is quite different that taking photos. It requires you to know very well the exact angles you need to film in and to be able to communicate very well with the person in the video. Sometimes, there are a lot of obstacles that may come in your way, such as people walking by and getting in the frame or bad weather conditions. These things are often unavoidable, which is why you should have lots of patience!

Another thing that is key when creating videos is the styling of the person who is starring in them. Before I established the Alex Aaronson Photography blog, I was really involved in the fashion world, and this is something I have also transferred into my photography career. This is why I always try to give recommendations when it comes to what sort of outfits would stand out in the video and what colours would be the most appropriate.

Last but not least, make sure that you stay in budget! Filming music videos often requires a big budget, which is something the artist is not always prepared for. In my experience as the owner of Alex Aaronson Photography, I have found that it is best to set a budget plan in the beginning and work around it- this way, you know you will stay within the limit. This video was created within a limited budget, however we really made the most out of all the setting and props we had!
