An American tourist fell asleep at an airport while he was waiting for a flight then had his belongings stolen.

John Marshall Felton, 30, was waiting for his plane at the Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok, Thailand last Sunday (December 15).

He nodded off with his waist pack containing his passport and money left on the metal luggage trolley.

But when John woke up, his bag was missing and he asked for help from the airport police.

CCTV footage from the airport showed a man wearing a surgical mask watching the American before walking over and snatching the bag as he slept.

Police captured the suspect, Suchat Sawasdee, 41, at the nearby train station as he was about to leave the airport. He was allegedly carried the tourist's bag.

Suchat admitted his crime and said that he used to work as an airport pushcart caretaker but he was fired because he drank on duty.

He said he spent his days wandering around the airport, eating tourists' leftover food.

Suchat said: ''The thought of stealing only came to me when I saw the sleeping American had left his valuables on the pushcart.''

Police Lieutenent General Chettha Komolwattana said that the suspect will be sent to the court.

He said: "He will be charged with stealing in the airport first before he is sent to court for legal procedures.''

The airport vice-director Kittipong Kittikachorn warned tourists to be more careful with their belongings, especially during the New Year's holiday period when the airport is crowded.

He said: "The airport is always full of people, especially during the Christmas and New Year time. We cannot always identify the potential wrongdoers, so the tourists must take care of their things carefully."
