Police said their original description of the suspect as a man of North African descent in his late 40s was incorrect.

The incident on Black Friday came just hours after two people were killed in a knife attack in London Bridge.

The extent of the minors' injuries was not yet known, De Telegraaf reported. Their age is also unknown.

A police spokesperson said the injured children were able to talk and the police are in contact with their family.

The man has not yet been located but a knife has been found after the attack in Grote Marktstraat, one of the city's busiest shopping areas.

Cops said their investigation into the case was "extensive".

Acting mayor Boudewijn Revis said he was horrified by the stabbing Friday night. He did not elaborate and neither city hall nor police officials were immediately available to comment.

One woman told De Telegraaf: "Nobody knew what was going on.

"At first it was said that there was a shot. That seems to be not so bad, but I hope the victims will recover soon."
