A private ceremony is being held at a cathedral in Busan for the mother of President Moon Jae-in, Kang Han-ok,... who died yesterday of a chronic illness.
President Moon asked that officials not attend, and of those who did were stopped by presidential security guards.
But the President has been making exceptions for diplomats.
A surprise visit was made by the ambassador of Japan, Nagamine Yasumasa, whose country is in a deepening row with South Korea over trade and historical issues.
Also paying their repects were ambassadors of the U.S., China and Russia.
They each spoke with the President for about five minutes.
The leaders of opposition political parties were also let in.
Most party leaders went earlier today, while the main opposition Liberty Korea Party chair, Hwang Kyo-ahn, will go later this evening.
Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon is also expected to attend the funeral, which ends tomorrow.
