The effects of social media on mental health have puzzled researchers for years. Some believe that Facebook usage can mess with your head. While social media has some mental health benefits, it also leads to increased rates of depression. The average user would need an incentive of $2,000 to stay off Facebook for one year. According to a Stanford-NYU study, quitting Facebook increased social interaction with family
and peers. It also increased feelings of well-being and decreased feelings of "political polarization." The study authors note that people with mental health issues are more prone to heavy
social media usage.
