Sereno seeks hike in judiciary's budget

MANILA -- She has been known for her policy of "dignified silence." But today, Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno faced the media in a 3-hour press conference, marking her first year in office. Sereno did not touch on the raging issue of pork barrel but raised the need to increase the judiciary's budget. She said judicial operations have been very difficult with the small budget given to them. Sereno also cited the Maguindanao massacre case as an example of the severely congested justice system.
