This is the most famous film produced by the prolific and inventive Georges Méliès. He wrote: "The idea of 'Voyage' was given to me by Jules Verne's book 'De la terre a la lune.' In this, the men cannot reach the moon, go around it, and come back to earth, having, in fact, failed in their expedition. So I imagined, using Jules Verne's procedure (cannon and shell) reaching the moon, so as to be able to compose a certain number of original and amusing... views of the interior and exterior... while adding one or two artistic effects (girls representing the stars, comets, etc, snow effect, bottom of the sea..." The narration is original, composed by Méliès, for the film was intended to be exhibited in fairgrounds and as a vaudeville act prior to the existence of movie theaters.
