"The Idyll". The Polka Mazurka Die Idylle dates from the summer of 1864 and was first performed on 15th July at the benefit concert held by the Strauss orchestra in the Vienna Volksgarten. The work closely mirrors the waltz Dorfschwalben aus Österreich Op. 164, which was performed for the first time on September 1864, also in the Volksgarten. The clarinet melody in the second movement of the Polka and the second motif in the trio are unmistakably related to the clarinet motif in the introduction to the famous waltz and bear witness to composer Josef Strauss' affinity with nature. The premiere took place under his baton, of course; nevertheless, it went virtually unnoticed.
