Josef Strauss tried out the merry polka Springinsfeld on 28th May 1865 at Carl Schwender's establishment "Neue Welt" and it was officially presented to the public for the first time on 30th May at the spring festival in the Volksgarten, on the newly reopened Ringstraße. There are many opinions regarding what is to be understood by a Springinsfeld. Many believe that it's a nickname for free lances; others say that during the Middle Ages traveling journeymen, particularly happy-go-lucky, carefree people, were referred to by this name. Also the term has meanings such as "merry factory worker who lived for the day" and a "lawbreaker who had broken out of prison". The illustrator of the title page of the piano score found a far less drastic interpretation: he sketched a young man with the first traces of a mustache above his lip, frolicking hand-in hand with his beloved amidst the newly sprouting spring-time blossoms. A second, more sedate couple follows in the background. This picture best suits the exhilarating, spring-like quick Polka.
