Luis Alvarez has passed away.

The 9/11 first responder who recently testified about extending the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund has died at the age of 53.
The family of former NYPD detective Luis Alvarez issued a statement to Facebook Saturday, writing, in part: "It is with peace and comfort, that the Alvarez family announce that Luis (Lou) Alvarez, our warrior, has gone home to our Good Lord in heaven today. Please remember his words, 'Please take care of yourselves and each other.'"
"We told him at the end that he had won this battle by the many lives he had touched by sharing his three year battle," the statement continued. "He was at peace with that, surrounded by family."
"Alvarez entered hospice care days after he appeared before Congress with comedian Jon Stewart to beg for funds for sick 9/11 first responders," notes the New York Post.
Alvarez died from complications of colorectal cancer--a disease linked to his time working within the rubble of the World Trade Center towers.
